Cheltenham trials day went ahead on Saturday despite the need for two inspections in the morning, where there were a mixture of results that have affected the ante-post betting markets for the Festival in March.
Up first was the Betfair Finesse Juvenile Novice's Hurdle where Paul Nicholls Triumph Hurdle hopeful Pistolet Noir went off an odds on favourite. It was however Nigel Twiston-Davies 100/1 shot Baccalaureate who secured a surprise win and as a result has been cut to 33/1 for the Triumph Hurdle by bookmaker Boylesports, with Nicholls' four-year-old now uncertain of his plans.
Hey Big Spender was a 5/1 winner of the Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase over two and a half miles for trainer Colin Tizzard and is a general 33/1 shot for the RSA Chase. The seven year old will also get an entry in the Jewsons at the festival where he'll be a danger.
The Sawyer followed up his win at Ascot last weekend by retaining the title of the Betfair Trophy Chase handicap over two and a half miles, a race he won twelve months ago. The 11/2 shot stuck his neck out on the run in to beat Private Be by three quarters of a length and will most probably run in one of the big handicaps at the festival in March.
The big race of the day was the Argento Chase, where Paul Nicholls trained Taranis to victory after an astonishing two year lay off. A previous winner of the Ryanair at the festival will now be aimed at the Totesport Gold Cup in March and strenghtens Nicholls' grip on the challenge. Taranis is a 25/1 shot for the Gold Cup with Boylesports.

Restless Harry was a 7/2 winner of the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle where he beat General Miller by eight lengths. The six year old will likely step up in trip for a crack at the Albert Bartlett at the festival where he is available to back at 7/1 with Boylesports.com. General Miller will likely be aimed at a shorter trip and is a 16/1 shot with the firm for the two mile Supreme Novices.
Tidal Bay switched to the smaller obstacles in the Cleeve Hurdle and returned to some form as well, winning by five lengths from Time For Rupert at 14/1. The Howard Johnson trained former Arkle winner has disappointed over the last few years but has now been shortened to 12/1 third favourite for the World Hurdle in March.
