Challow Novices Hurdle Odds: Fingal Bay heads betting for Newbury Grade 1

There's a terrific card at Newbury on New Year's Day but the highlight is the Grade 1 Challow Novices' Hurdle off at 3.05pm from the Berkshire track. Run over two and a half miles, this novice hurdle is a trial for the Neptune Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and ante-post favourite Fingal Bay lines up here at short odds of 3/10 with bookmaker Betfred. Past winners of this race include Denman, Wichita Lineman and Diamond Harry so this is a good race to spot future chasing stars over three miles.

The Phillip Hobbs trained five year old is unbeaten in his four starts and three times this season over hurdles. Ante-post favourite for both the Neptune (5/1) and the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (11/2) at Cheltenham, the gelding looks as though he can stay further than two and a half miles, which will be a big plus on Saturday on the soft ground at Newbury. A winner at Chepstow on debut over hurdles in the Grade 2 Persian War Novices' Hurdle, he then went on to win at Cheltenham in the Grade 2 Hyde Novices' Hurdle at the Open Meeting. A winner last time out on the good to soft at Sandown in the Grade 2 Winter Novices' Hurdle it looks as though the horse officially rated 144 (23lbs higher than his closest rival) will take all the beating here.

Top Of The Range puts his unbeaten record on the line having one once over hurdles in a maiden at Ffos Las on his only start this season back in November. David Bass will take the ride for Nicky Henderson and he may be the biggest threat to the market leader at odds of 4/1 with Betfred.

Fill The Power is the most experienced of the six runners, the five year old trained by Sue Smith has won twice from three starts this season, most recently winning at Newcastle by seven lengths and can be backed at 20/1 with Bet Fred.

Double Ross (20/1) is the entry of Nigel Twiston-Davies, a winner earlier this month in a class 4 contest at Folkstone, he was beaten sixteen and a half lengths in a Class 3 contest at Ascot in November and it's difficult to see him improving enough to trouble the market leader here. The outsider of the field is the Tim Vaughan trained Ballyrock (25/1) who comes here off the back of a win in a maiden hurdle at Hereford last time out. This is a big step up in class however and has something to prove at this level.
