Wings Of Eagles Can Follow Up Epsom Success With Irish Derby Glory

Saturday 1st July 2017, 5.20pm - Irish Derby (The Curragh)

The eyes of the racing world will fall on the Curragh on Saturday eveing for the Irish Derby, and it promises to be a thrilling contest. Any classic race is to be enjoyed, but that is even more the case this weekend with three very exciting horses in particular at the head of the betting.

  • Aidan O'Brien has trained the winner of the Irish Derby 11 times in his career - but only once in the last four years

Top Trio Set To Fight It Out

It is always fantastic to see the Epsom Derby winner head to the Curragh to try and complete the famous double and Wings Of Eagles aiming to do just that.

The Aidan O'Brien horse was a big priced outsider for Aidan O'Brien at Epsom but after coming with a late run, he won a touch cosily in the end, and it will be fascinating to see if he can follow up. Some on the day suggested that he benefited from the leaders going too quick, but the winner still encountered some trouble in-running, and quickened up like a very good horse.

Ryan Moore will be on-board Wings Of Eagles this weekend, and punters who fancy him for the Curragh win can get 9/4 with William Hill.

Cracksman (3/1) was 3rd at Epsom for John Gosden and he re-opposes at the Curragh looking to reverse that form. He ran a good race that day, but did look a little green on the camber of the Downs, and he is sure to go close again, with a little more experience behind him.

The joker in the pack could well be Waldgeist who is coming over to Ireland from France for master trainer Andre Fabre. The money has been coming for him all week which is a major pointer, but he will need more to mix it with these boys, especially at a skinny looking 5/2 with bet365.

Any Other Contenders?

The top three in the betting look to have this between them with the rest of the field likely to struggle at this level.

Capri (9/1) is a solid yardstick but seems to be just below top notch, whilst similar comments apply to Derrinstown winner Douglas Macarthur (14/1) who maybe used as a pacemaker by Ballydoyle.

Jessica Harrington has been sweeping all before her over the jumps and on the flat in 2017, and that is enough for us to respect King George V Cup winner Grandee (33/1) at a big price, although like a number of these, this is a big jump in class for a young horse.

Conclusion

Punters need to make a decision on the Epsom Derby before having a bet on the Curragh, and in my view Wings Of Eagles was a ready winner that day. He met trouble-in running but flew down the outside to win with something in hand, and although the French horse is a joker in the pack, we are backing the Aidan O'Brien horse to complete the Derby double.
