Flymetothestars to outclass rivals in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle
Saturday 1st July, 2017 - 3:30pm Newcastle - Northumberland Plate
One of the staying handicaps of the Flat season takes place on Saturday as a field of 20 stamina-laden runners head to the 2m 56y start at Newcastle for the annual running of the Northumberland Plate, and as is usually the case, we have a wide open betting contest for punters to get stuck into at the north east venue.
- Seamour was 2nd in this race last year
- Flymetothestars has won three of four career runs
- Four of the last five winners have carried 9st or more

Brian Ellison's Seamour put up a bold effort in this race 12 months ago when finishing second to Antiquarium, and having finished sixth two years ago then will be hoping it's third time lucky, but the 11/2 shot with Paddy Power has struggled to get his head in front in recent times, and is 4lb higher in the ratings than last year, so may just be vulnerable to a potential improver.
That contender who is on a steep incline is the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Flymetothestars, who is the 5/1 favourite with Betfred, and was last seen storming to a two-length victory at Newcastle, which was his second win in a row at that venue, and while he has been upped 9lb for that success he could have the scope to land this prize.
With three wins in his four career starts, this son of Sea The Stars could be seen in Group staying races by the end of this season, and with Prescott's stayers always improver as they get older then it could be a win in this race that sees his reputation enhance further in the staying division.
James Fanshawe's Higher Power is the only other contender priced up in single figures, and after a brace of second placed efforts the 8/1 third favourite with bet365 is aiming to go one better, but while his recent form with Big Orange has been given a huge boost he was well beaten by the Gold Cup hero that day, and may find things tough from the top of the handicap.
Worth A Mention
Mark Johnston's Jaameh is another in-form runner taking his chance, and wins at Chester and Newmarket have seen him launch up the ratings, but with another 5lb penalty to carry for that win at Flat HQ he could find it tough here, and is avoidable at 10/1 with Coral, while Jim Goldie's Sir Chauvelin is another winner last time out, but this a lot tougher, and at 16/1 with BetVictor will struggle.
Saeed bin Suroor's Natural Scenery failed to land the hat-trick when sixth in the All Weather Marathon Championships, but the Godolphin raider has to be a leading player here if returning to his best, and is a leading each-way contender at 10/1 with BetVictor, while Lord George (12/1) will add more depth to the aforementioned Fanshawe's charge, and is a model of consistency, so could grab a place.
Best Of The Rest
Clever Cookie is not the force of old, but the top-weighted raider can't be completely discounted if he can recapture his best form, and could attract some attention at 25/1 with Sky Bet, while Yorkidding and Hot Beat, both 20/1, will be another brace of notable contenders in what is a race that can go the way of the favourite.
