Despite his confirmation that he will be looking to win the jockey championship for a second year running, Paul Hanagan has only been made the third favourite to do so with odds of 4/1 on offer from Paddy Power, who have installed Ryan Moore, champion jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009 as the even money favourite.
Hanagan won the title for the first time last season, riding 191 winners, two clear of Richard Hughes and has high hopes of repeating the feat as the season gets underway in earnest this week. Hanagan and Hughes were involved in an epic contest last season which went down to the last day, with Hanagan hanging on grimly having led the championship from the first week of the season.
Whether it will be a similar story this season is debatable, but certainly if it develops that way then Moore would also have to be included as it was injuries that kept him behind the top two last season. Moore will almost certainly get the rides that he would need and by all accounts he wants to regain the title badly. It is worth noting that Hanagan had 1102 rides last season, compared to 1045 ridden by Hughes while Moore only rode 772.
The Bookmakers by and large have made the jockey championship a four way battle with the fourth major player being six times former champion, Kieran Fallon, who like Moore, has confirmed that he will be all out to win the title for a seventh time. Fallon now completely free from controversy can bank on being given plenty of rides this season and if in form then he would be the pick of most who still believe him to be the best jockey in the world. Fallon came fourth in the race last season with 131 winners from 779 rides, six behind Moore but this year he can rely upon an overall better quality of rides. This is probably why paddypower have him as second favourite with odds of 7/2.
Possibly against Fallon will be his age, he is now 46 and should he win he will become the oldest champion since Lester Piggott in 1982 who was 47. The oldest jockey however to win the title was Scobie Breasley in 1957 and Sir Gordon Richards in 1953 who were both 49; Fallon has not won the title for eight years.
