One of the Toughest Betting Heats In Racing
Finding the winner of the Cambridgeshire is one of the toughest tasks in sport for punters, and this weekend will be no different with the market as competitive as ever.
Of the 35 runners declared, it appears as if Thundering Blue is going to start as the warm favourite for trained David Menuisier. The 4YO has won his last three starts, including last time out at Sandown, and although he is up 6lbs for the win, plenty still fancy him at around 7/1 with Paddy Power.
This is far from straightforward though with a whole host of horses in behind the favourite in the market, including Big Country (12/1) who ran well last time out when 2nd at York and up just a pound for that run, he could well be in the shake up at HQ for Michael Appleby.
Brorocco (14/1) is another one with a win last time and as long as the ground is decent enough, he could be competitive off of his new mark, whilst similar comments apply to Leader Writer (16/1) who is up 5lbs for his win at Ascot and could be a player for Henry Spiller.
As you expect, Godolphin have a strong hand in the field with Very Talented perhaps the one with the best chance of Cambridgeshire glory. Pat Smullen is a fascinating jockey booking for a horse not seen since finishing 3rd in this last year, and although fitness is a worry, he has to be respected off just a pound more at 16/1 with Ladbrokes.
Qassem (22/1) looks overpriced after a good run last time out at York and does remain slightly unexposed which is interesting, whilst El Hayem (14/1) is sure to attract money for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore, and there does look like a big race in him sooner rather than later.
A frighteningly difficult heat for punters to pick over as always and any number of these are expected to run well. The one our pin has landed on is Naval Warfare who looks more than capable of running a big race, and remains unexposed at this level. A winner at Newmarket two starts ago, he ran well last time a Sandown and up another furlong, the Andrew Balding horse is the bet at 16/1 with Ladbrokes.
