The maximum field of 28 has been declared for Saturday's hugely competitive Steward's Cup at Glorious Goodwood. The well fancied Hoof It received a further boost when he drew stall 18 and Mick Easterby's gelding is 6/1 favourite with William Hill for this valuable six furlong handicap.
Drawing centre stalls has tended to be favourable in recent years and Hills reacted to Hoof It's draw by clipping him in from 7/1 to 6/1. The 4-year-old gelding carries top weight of 10st and a penalty of 6lbs after winning the SkyBet Dash in fine style at York last week
The progressive horse, part-owned by golfer Lee Westwood, looks to be a Group One sprinter in the making after destroying the rest of the field on the Knavesmire and he could well overcome his penalty for victory this weekend.
Next best in the odds is James Fanshawe's Mac's Power at an industry best of 8/1, despite the Exceed and Excel gelding drawing stall one on the far side rail. The 5-year-old continues to progress impressively and cannot be discounted on the draw alone, particularly as he was a six furlong sprint winner and a narrow eighth, behind Hoof It, in the Wokingham. A bit more cut in the ground would be appreciated though.
Meanwhile, Paul D'Arcy's strong travelling Edinburgh Knight has been well backed in recent days and is now available at odds of 12/1 with Hills. The 4-year-old is relatively unexposed and represents an interesting punt after showing an impressive turn of pace to win a six furlong handicap at Newcastle last month.
Dandy Nicholls goes in mob-handed this year and his leading hope would appear to be 14/1 shot Victoire de Lyphar. The 4-year-old was second in the Ayr Gold Cup and in the Steward's sprint during an excellent 2010 season, although the gelding has struggled this year. Last year's Steward's Cup winner, Odds and Evens (20/1), is back to defend his crown at 4lbs higher. The gelding has little form to call on this season, although the same could be said last year when he went on to glory.
Elsewhere, 14/1 punt Pastoral Player, just three lengths back from Deacon Blues when third in the Wokingham, is far from straightforward and produced a poor effort in the Steward's sprint last year.
Next best in the odds is Colonel Mak at 16/1 with WilliamHill.com and David Barron's gelding could be worth a look after he finished second in the Scottish Steward's Cup at Hamilton last time out and he goes off the same mark here.
Of more interest could be an each-way look at Crown Choice as Walter Swinburn's gelding looks the pick of a host of 20/1 hopes for this competitive handicap. The relatively lightly raced 6-year-old has been much improved since dropping back to six furlongs and was a course and distance handicap winner back in May. Course form could count for a lot this weekend and it is well worth noting that the gelding managed a very fine fourth in the red hot Bunbury Cup last time out.
6/1 Hoof It
8/1 Mac's Power
12/1 Edinburgh Knight
14/1 Victoire de Lyphar
14/1 Pastoral Player
16/1 Colonel Mak
20/1 BAR
