Ruby Walsh rides Big Fella into Grand National Betting favourtism

Ruby Walsh has been confirmed as the jockey who will ride Big Fella Thanks in this year's John Smith's Grand National and as a result the Paul Nicholls' trained eight year old has been backed into odds of 7/1 favourtism with online bookmaker Bet365 for the race on the 10th April.

Walsh would have been given the choice between Big Fella Thanks, Tricky Trickster and My Will for the race and decided to go with the horse carrying the least weight in the race. Walsh rode the horse last time out when he won the Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury and the decision to ride him in the National has made an immediate impact on the odds. Tricky Trickster ran no sort of race in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last time out and remains a 12/1 chance for the Aintree showpiece whilst My Will, who Walsh rode to third in last year's race is a 33/1 shot with Bet365.

It looks as though Big Fella Thanks is ideally weighted for the Grand National carrying 10-12, as only Hedgehunter has carried more than eleven stone around the four miles and four furlong course to victory in the past twenty years. The Harry Findlay and Paul Barber owned eight year old took to the fences well in last year's race, where he finished sixth place carrying two punds more, so all the signs are good!

As ever, the Grand National will be a competitive betting affair and punters will be looking to get revenge on the bookmakers who celebrated after Mon Mome won the race at odds of 100/1 twelve months ago. The Venetia Williams trained ten-year-old is a 10/1 shot this time round with the likes of Irish raider Arbor Supreme also having recieved plenty of interest. Trainer Dessie Hughes is double handed in this year's race with Vic Venturi and Black Apalachi, who both have experience over the National fences.
