Djakadam a hot favourite for BetBright Trial Chase at Cheltenham

Saturday 30th January, 2016 - 1:50pm Cheltenham - BetBright Trial Chase

Djakadam has repeatedly escaped the spotlight, as his somewhat lauded stablemates have often dwarved his reputation, but last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up will aim to cement his place at the head of the 2016 Gold Cup betting on Saturday when he heads to Prestbury Park to do battle in the Grade 2 BetBright Trial Chase.

  • Looks Like Trouble was last horse to win this race and Gold Cup in same season in 2000.
  • Djakadam was second in 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup
  • Many Clouds won this race 12 months ago

Djakadam An Odds-On Jolly For Gold Cup Trial

A facile 12-length win on his comeback run at Punchestown in the John Durkan Memorial Chase launched Djakadam to the head of the Gold Cup betting, but whilst he is a 7/2 shot to go one better in that race on March 18, the Willie Mullins-trained star has been installed as a 4/7 shot with William Hill for this fascinating trial.

A gallant runner-up to Coneygree in last season's marquee event at Prestbury Park, Djakadam has blossomed over fences and the manner in which he dispatched of some classy rivals in that aforementioned Punchestown event suggests there's a lot more to come over the larger obstacles and he's entitled to be a short-priced favourite for this event.

Mullins may have dominated the National Hunt sphere all season, but the Closutton handler still holds aspirations of winning his first Gold Cup and in Djakadam he could hold his trump card for glory in that showpiece event here, but Djakadam is far from a backable option here at 4/7, with some firms going as short as 4/9, and with a classy field taking their chance it could be worth trying to find some improved value elsewhere.

Grand National Hero Clouds Aims To Retain Grade 2 Crown

Oliver Sherwood's Many Clouds used victory in this race 12 months ago as a springboard to Grand National glory at Aintree, and whilst his sights are well and truly set on a return to that marathon showpiece in April, he is worthy of a second look in this race, and he is a best-priced 7/1 with Sky Bet to notch up a repeat win.

Comfortably beaten by another Gold Cup hope in Don Poli at Aintree last time out, Many Clouds is sure to run a solid race, but with his season based around a return trip to Merseyside he may not be fully tuned up for this test and whilst he run a solid race he could well find it tough to live with the red-hot jolly from Ireland.

Hennessy Gold Cup hero Smad Place is next in the betting at 8/1, but he failed to land any significant blow in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day and having tasted defeat on his six career starts at Cheltenham, he's going to find it tough to make it seventh time lucky here, and whilst his free-going style will test his rivals stamina, he could just come up short late on.

Cheltenham Regular Winner Can Outrun Lofty Odds

Paul Nicholls's Sam Winner has been a regular fixture at Cheltenham over the last few seasons, and the DItcheat inmate will have his 12th start at GL50 on Saturday, but if he can build on his fourth-placed finish in the Charlie Hall Chase in October then he could be over-priced at 16/1 with bet365 and marks superb each-way value.

Unable to land a blow in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, which was run at ferocious gallop, Sam Winner could enjoy a less testing pace in what are set to be energy-sapping conditions and with the trip no problem, he could be doing his best work late on and storming up the hill he could make the frame for a seventh time at the track.

O'Faolains Boy was a fine winner at Newbury in December and Rebecca Curtis' charge, who was a sensational winner of the 2014 RSA Chase, could be another primary challenger here, and he is interesting at 9/1, whilst The Giant Bolster has often relished the undulations of Cheltenham and at 33/1 with Ladbrokes will appeal to some nostalgic punters.
