Five runners will go to post in the Grade 2 Boylesports.com Tied Cottage Chase on Sunday at Punchestown, with the winner of last season's Champion Chase and Arkle meeting on a racecourse for the first time. Race favourite Big Zeb is the odds on favourite ahead of Sizing Europe in this fascinating two mile chase in what is likely to be the main protagonist's final run before the Cheltenham Festival in March.
All eyes will be on the Conner Murphy trained Big Zeb, winner of last year's Queen Mother Champion Chase in fine style and two time winner this season. The ten year old has taken some time to show his class in the two mile chasing division, but a huge improvement in his jumping over the last twelve months now sees him unbeaten in four races and favourite to retain his Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2011 with some bookmakers. Sunday's sponsor Boylesports are still holding their best price 3/1 about his chances in March, but that price is sure to be snapped up should he confirm the odds and take the Tied Cottage Chase. The sponsors Boyle Sports go 4/5 that he'll win this race, just as he did twelve months ago but there is some serious competition in the shape of Golden Silver and Sizing Europe should he not be on top of his game.
Since winning the Champion Chase in 2010, Big Zeb has comfortably won on his two reappearances this season, beating Sunday's second favourite Golden Silver by less than two lengths on both occassions, first in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan in November and followed up over Christmas winning the Grade 1 Dial-a-bet Chase. The Willie Mullins trained Golden Silver is a Grade 1 winner over in Ireland, despite finishing behind Big Zeb twice this season. The nine year old won the Boylesports.com Champion Chase at Punchestown last April and was a winner last time out at Fairyhouse earlier this month. The odds suggest it is unlikely that he'll be able to turn the tables with Big Zeb on Sunday, with Boyles going best price 10/3 second favourite.
Sizing Europe could be the main danger to Big Zeb at Punchestown on Sunday. Last year's impressive Arkle winner at Cheltenham has been running over longer distances this season, with the Gold Cup very much in mind from connections. The nine year old was lined up to run in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day but due to the postponement takes his chances here instead. Last seen finishing four lengths behind Kauto Star in the Jnwine Champion Chase at Down Royal in November, the Henry De Bromhead trained gelding is as big as 33/1 for the Totesport Gold Cup and 8/1 for the Champion Chase, which you'd think is his more likely destination at the Cheltenham Festival. A win here at odds of 10/3 would most certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons as far as the betting goes for the Champion Chase in March.
Making up the field are Scotsirish and Changing Course. At odds of 16/1 it would be a big surprise if Scotsirish made the frame and he was last seen finishing third behind Big Zeb and Golden Silver at Leopardstown, albeit by only two and three quarter lengths. Changing Course however is a massive 250/1 for Sunday's race and it would be a big surprise if Henry De Bromhead's second string in the race were to finish anywhere but last.
4/5 Big Zeb*
10/3 Golden Silver*
10/3 Sizing Europe
