Thirteen runners go to post in Tuesday's Grade 1 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown, with the Willie Mullins trained Cooldine heading the betting in what looks like an open contest. Hopes were high of Cooldine following his impressive win in the 2009 RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, but the eight year old has failed to hit the heights on the racecourse since, with injury troubles and just a second place finish in last season's Hennessy Gold Cup here at Leopardstown his best return in nearly two years. On his seasonal reappearance at Fairyhouse, Cooldine could only muster a didth place finish in the John Durkan Memorial Chase when he was sent off the favourite. The trip may have been too sharp for him on that day at two and a half miles but he's weak in the betting at best price 4/1 odds with Ladbrokes to get back to winning ways over his preferred three miles on Wednesday.
Second favourite is the Paul Nolan trained Joncol, a giant of a horse who beat Cooldine in that Hennessy last February. The seven year old has won more than half of his nine chases, but is a brittle type who needs to be wrapped in cotton wool. With Cheltenham not the likely destination for the son of Bob's Return, this valuable Grade 1 will have been earmarked by trainer Paul Nolan and conditions look like suiting. Last seen finishing last of four in the Fortia Navan Chase over two miles, he'll relish this return to three miles and is a real danger at 5/1 with Ladbrokes.
After weeks of snow and frost, Leopardstown is descibed as being heavy for today's meeting, which could play into the hands of mudlark The Listener, who has been backed into 7/1 third favourite with bookmaker Ladbrokes. A winner of this race back in 2006 when trained by Robert Alner, the eleven year old is less prolific these days and hasn't been seen on a racecourse since winning the JNWine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal over a year ago. The fact that he has been backed in on Wednesday morning is a postive however and English trained horses have an excellent record in this race. You have to go back to 2005 for the last Irish trained winner of the race with Beef Or Salmon and the Lexus Chase alumni inlcudes greats such as Denman and Best Mate. The Listener and 8/1 chance Money Trix carry the hopes for England this year.
Elsewhere in this open looking contest, Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Pandorama is one of four horses with odds of 8/1 this afternoon. The Noel Meade trained seven year old pulled up on his only run in 2010 to date in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, but is held in high regard. He won four straight hurdle contests in a row in 2009 and looked like being Ireland's best hope for the RSA Chase before an injury setback and could be best watched today. J'Y Vole is a far more interesting prospect today, the Willie Mullins trained mare was second behind Tranquil Sea in the John Durkan Memorial Chase earlier this month and could relish the extra half mile today, especially given the fact she is recieving five pounds from her rivals and looks a decent each-way bet at odds of 8/1 with Ladbrokes, a best industry price.
