Big Buck's heads the betting for the re-arranged Long Walk Hurdle at Newbury on Wednesday. The Grade 1 contest had originally been scheduled to be run at Ascot earlier in December but fell victim to the weather. As a result, the extended three mile hurdle will be run at the Berkshire track and has been renamed to the A.P. Wins Sports Personality Long Walk Hurdle. It is rather apt then that the SPOTY winner and Champion jockey takes the spare ride on the race favourite, in place of the injured Ruby Walsh and Noel Fehily. The Paul Nicholls trained seven year old made his seasonal debut at Newbury, winning the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle with the usual modicum of ease, beating two of Wednesday's opponents along the way. The champion staying hurdler has won the last nine races in a row since he unseated jockey Sam Thomas in the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup. Bookmaker Bet365 go 1/5 that Big Buck's stretches his unbeaten run to ten races on Wednesday and he remains a solid 5/6 chance to make it three in a row in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.
Nicky Henderson trains eight year old Duc De Regniere, who was runner up behind Big Buck's in November's Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury. Having reverted back to hurdles, Henderson sees Duc De Regniere as his main hope for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle and although he finished just three lengths behind the champion last month, the win was far easier than the result suggests on paper. Bet 365 make Duc De Regniere their second favourite at odds of 8/1, a best industry price and a decent each-way bet for him to finish in the top two. You could get even more value betting on the forecast with Big Buck's to finish first and Nicky Henderson's runner to finish second.
Restless Harry made punters sit up and take notice when winning a Grade 2 trial for the Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham last January but has failed to capitalise on that early promise. A faller in the Albert Bartlett at the festival, the six year old picked up a win at Cheltenham in their end of season card but has disappointed in all three of his starts so far this season. Beaten comfortably into third by Silvianaco Conti in the Coral Ascot Hurdle and a poor finish in the Relkeel Hurdle at the start of the month make it unlikely that he'll push the favourite here. At 14/1 Restless Harry is third favourite.
The sextet is made up by Kayf Aramis, Lough Derg and Afsoun. 22/1 chance Kayf Aramis is trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and is a Cheltenham Festival winner, scoring in the Pertemps Final back in 2009. The eight year old finished second behind Fair Along in the West Yorkshire Hurdle in October but has not been first past the post since winning a handicap at York on the flat in May 2009. Veteran Lough Derg will probably make the pace but is another who is struggling to find a win, last scoring in a Grade 2 hurdle at Fontwell nearly two years ago. Finally, Afsoun is a big price 100/1 with Bet365, having once finished seventh in a Champion Hurdle, he was brought down last time out and it would be a huge upset were he to place here.
1/5 Big Buck's
8/1 Duc De Regniere
14/1 Restless Harry
22/1 Kayf Aramis
28/1 Lough Derg
100/1 Afsoun
