Hennessy winner Carruthers a long shot in the latest Cheltenham Festival betting

Another exciting weekend in the world of national hunt horse racing saw the bookmakers amending their odds for the Cheltenham Festival in March. The weekend's big feature race saw Carruthers notch a surprise victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury and the 8-year-old has been priced up at 40/1 by Bet 365 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Mark Bradstock's gelding produced a brilliant front-running performance to virtually make all from 10/1 on Saturday. The win put paid to Great Endeavour's hopes of becoming only the third horse to do the Paddy Power Gold Cup and Hennessy double during a season. Great Endeavour didn't get the last two furlongs when taking on a longer trip at the weekend and David Pipe's 7-year-old is another 40/1 long shot for the Gold Cup in March.

Also at Newbury, Big Buck's romped to his expected and now almost traditional Long Distance Hurdle win. The long distance hurdler again showed his class as the 1/8 favourite cruised to a third successive win in the race, beating stablemate Five Dream by five lengths. Paul Nicholls' 8-year-old travelled and jumped as well as ever as he equalled the all time record of 13 consecutive hurdle wins set by Bula in the 1970s. Big Buck's, winner of the last three World Hurdles, remains a 4/7 odds on favourite for the 2012 World Hurdle with Bet 365, with Thousand Stars currently the best of the rest at 7/1.

Elsewhere, there was an exciting battle in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle as Binocular and Overturn reopposed one another again. Overturn was victorious this time as Donald McCain Jr's gelding made all to beat Binocular by four and a half lengths and Overturn is now a 14/1 shot for the Champion Hurdle, as well as a 14/1 chance for the World Hurdle, in March. The 7-year-old is likely to get only one more run before the Festival, although McCain has indicated that it is unlikely to be in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton next month.

Binocular comfortably beat Overturn in the Christmas Hurdle last year but he once again struggled in the Fighting Fifth on Saturday as he was the beaten favourite at Newcastle for a third year in a row. Bet365.com reacted by easing Binocular out from 10/1 to 12/1 for the Champion Hurdle.

Meanwhile, Overturn's stablemate Peddlers Cross underlined his exciting potential over fences as he made it two chase wins from two at Bangor on Saturday. Last season's Champion Hurdle runner-up cruised to victory on only his second start over fences and he remains the 7/2 favourite for the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham.
