Philip Hobbs' Fair Along will bid for an unprecedented hat-trick on Saturday as the gelding bids to win the John Smith's Hurdle (registered as the West Yorkshire Hurdle) for a third year in a row. The 9-year-old faces a tough task though as seven others take on the 3 mile and one furlong trip at Wetherby, with What A Friend favourite at odds of 3/1 with Bet365.
The Grade Two race is part of the undercard for the Charlie Hall Chase and Paul Nicholls enters the Sir Alex Ferguson-owned What A Friend. The 8-year-old has proven himself to be a top notch chaser and he could be an interesting contender when reverting to hurdles on Saturday. The 3/1 shot was fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the 8-year-old will be ridden by Ruby Walsh, who does race in Britain this weekend.
Dual champion Fair Along (11/2) will bid for a third straight win in the race after beating Kayf Aramis by a length and a quarter last year. The gelding carries a big penalty as he takes top weight of 11st 8lbs, although Hobbs is hoping that the trend of him producing his best when he is fresh continues on his first start of the season.
Robin Dickin can boast a live contender in Restless Harry, who had been set to go chasing this season before dry ground at the yard caused Dickin to reconsider and to send him to the hurdles of Wetherby instead. The 7-year-old is well respected after finishing third in the Long Walk Hurdle last season, and he looks worth backing (at odds of 4/1 with Bet 365) to pick up a first win since stepping up from novice company.
Meanwhile, Carlito Brigante (5/1) will be looking to rediscover his Cheltenham Festival winning form. The 5-year-old ran away with the Coral Cup back in March as the son of Haafhd cruised home by six lengths.
However, he has been beaten in three outings since, including defeats to Quevega at Punchestown and Big Buck's at Aintree. There isn't quite that standard of opposition here this weekend but his last place of fourteen on the flat at Dundalk last month doesn't inspire confidence.
His trainer Gordon Elliot is hoping it doesn't rain anymore in the north west, with stablemate Russian War also amongst the field. The 8-year-old won six times over hurdles up to three miles last year but he faces a big step up in class this weekend, with Bet365.com pricing him 9/1.
Elsewhere, the inconsistent Ashkazar (5/1) should improve for the run this weekend and has previous form after winning a 3 mile handicap at Cheltenham in January.
Paul Webber's Cantlow (12/1) is another that looks to have plenty to give over hurdles as the lightly raced gelding won over 3 miles at Ludlow in February and picked up an impressive second place in a Grade One at Aintree in April.
Mobaasher (25/1), runner up in this race in 2008, completes the field for Rod Millman and connections will be hoping for a big improvement after a disappointing first outing for his new yard last month.
