The Galway Handicap Hurdle to be run on Ladies Day at the Galway Races looks to be a fabulous renewal with any number in with great chances. The ‘talking horse’ and favourite, currently is the Donald McCain trained, Overturn, winner of the Grade Two Scottish Champion Hurdle in April and second in the Grade Three, Swinton Hurdle in May. This very exciting six year old warmed up perfectly for Thursday’s Galway feature, with a tremendous win on the flat in the valuable, Northumberland Plate a month ago at Newcastle. It is form that is simply too good to ignore, which is why we think he is a great bet to turn the Bookmakers over in this with odds of 7/1 with Paddy Power Bookmakers.
McCain has stated that the Galway Hurdle is a very obvious race at this stage, particularly as the horse is still in great form and will relish a run. However, he is also aware of the quality field and the mark given his horse by the Irish Handicapper.
His biggest threat on paper looks likely to come from the Gordon Elliott trained, Dirar, a good winner last month of a good quality handicap at Ayr and who is said to be in great form at home. He is also around the 7/1 but can be backed at 15/2, while third place in the betting is the very obviously dangerous, Dermot Weld trained, New Phase who is currently at 10/1.
2010 Galway Hurdle Odds Comparison
New Phase is a lightly raced 6 year old who warmed up for his tilt at the Galway Hurdle with a creditable 4th place in the Adare Festival Hurdle earlier this month, where he looked like he needed the run. Given that he will almost certainly improve on that performance he is a definate prospect to win this.

The increasingly successful Welsh trainer, Evan Williams is sending two runners over for the race, one of which, Tiger O’Toole is a genuine each way prospect as far as we are concerned. Although well behind the highly thought of, Australia Day in the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen a fortnight ago, this four year old had won four of his six previous starts and fits the profile of horses who run well in races such as this. At 20/1 with Paddy Power he should not be missed.
