With Cheltenham Festival just a matter of weeks away, Paddy Power bookmakers are offering to refund bets if race favourite Cue Card wins the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. The ante-post favourite is currently 9/4 to win and the bookmaker will refund all bets of up to £200 if Colin Tizzard's horse justifies that favouritism.
The last two renewals of the Supreme have seen the ante-post favourites lose out as Cousin Vinny missed out in 2009 and hot 2010 favourite Dunguib finished third to Menorah. Like Dunguib, Cue Card is going for a Champion Bumper-Supreme Novices double this year after winning the Bumper last term and will be hoping to achieve a brilliant Cheltenham double.
The 5-year-old has been in impressive form this season, winning his first two races over hurdles, at Aintree and Cheltenham respectively. However, his unbeaten career record came to an end at the hands of leading Champion Hurdle contender Menorah in his last outing in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham in December. That second place finish was his first defeat in five starts and it is worth noting that twelve of the last fourteen Supreme Novices winners had won their last outing before the Festival.
Nicky Henderson will be leading the charge to beat Cue Card at Cheltenham Festival as he looks for his first winner in the race since 1992 when Flown claimed glory. Henderson boasts two of the leading contenders in Spirit Son and Sprinter Sacre this year, with Paddy Power making Spirit Son second favourite at odds of 11/2. The 5-year-old was an impressive winner at Exeter a few weeks ago as he cruised to a 21 length win over Paul Nicholls' Cedre Bleu.
His stablemate Sprinter Sacre has also been well backed and is available at 7/1 in the betting with Paddy Power. With four wins from five career starts, the 5-year-old looks a classy performer and he was brilliant in winning at Ascot by seven lengths recently, just two weeks after comfortably winning by ten lengths at Ffos Las.
Elsewhere, Totesport Trophy winner Recession Proof has been clipped right in to 9/1 in the betting with PaddyPower. It was the 5-year-old's third win in five starts over hurdles as he edged out Bothy by a short head at Newbury, and that win saw PaddyPower.com shorten the John Quinn trained horse from 33/1.
Willie Mullins' Zaidpour has also been well backed and is available at 9/1 in the betting but failed to impress on his last outing when finishing second to Oscars Well at Leopardstown two weeks ago. Mullins has indicated that Zaidpour will most likely go in for the Supreme rather than the Neptune, and there has also been indications that Dermot Weld's Unaccompanied is likely to be re-routed to the Supreme.
Unaccompanied is an industry best price of 25/1 with PaddyPower.com after impressing in winning at Leopardstown two weeks ago and could be surprise challenger at the Festival. There is plenty of quality to be found in the field, including 14/1 punt Al Ferof, as the betting hots up for the opening race of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival.
