Thursday's Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood sees ten fillies and mares go to post for the Group Three race and it is a host of three years old who dominate the odds. Sir Henry Cecil's Wild Coco is favourite at odds of 13/8 with Paddy Power, although Field Of Miracles and French raider Shankardeh cannot be discounted over the mile and six furlong trip.
A 3-year-old has won three of the past eight Lillie Langtry renewals and the three at the head of the odds look well set to enhance that trend. With those in the Classic age group carrying a stone less than their elder rivals, we fancy Wild Coco et al will take some beating.
Sir Henry Cecil, winner with Sevenna in 2009, enters Wild Coco, who won a mile and a half maiden at Haydock in June and the exciting prospect has further enhanced her reputation at Newmarket since. The filly won from Meeznah in a listed race, despite her jockey being 2lbs overweight, and she can continue her progress this week with the trip not expected to be a problem.
However, John Gosden's Field Of Miracles should provide a stiff challenge and the daughter of Galileo can be backed at 7/2. She started her season with a win over a mile and a half at Kempton and has since finished a massively impressive second to Banimpire in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. That place looks even better when you consider Banimpire only lost to Blue Bunting by a short head in the Irish Oaks recently, and Gosden's entry should stay the extra trip this week, with the only doubt being ground conditions.
An interesting contender comes in the form of another 3-year-old, Shankardeh (6/1), as the French filly makes her first appearance on British soil. She won her first two starts in France and was an excellent third in the Group Two Prix de Mallect at Saint-Cloud last time out, and if the ground does ease slightly she cannot be discounted.
The elder entries for the race are led by Motrice, who is priced 10/1 by PaddyPower.com. The 5-year-old found the two mile four furlong trip too much in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last time out and will relish the step back in distance after finishing third in this race for Clive Cox last year. Cox also enters the runner-up from last year's renewal in Polly's Mark (14/1), who has endured a tough 2011 season after an ill fated spell with visors and looks to have place claims at best.
Meanwhile, Meeznah (8/1) will attempt to turn the tables on Wild Coco from Newmarket, where she shaped well. However, she is still looking for her first win in pattern company and has only one career win to date, with a reversal on the ante-post favourite looking a tough ask.
Sir Michael Stoute enters Ship's Biscuit, who is available at odds of 14/1 with PaddyPower.com. The lightly raced 4-year-old filly was sixth here last year and could improve on that after finishing fourth in a Sandown listed event last time out.
Elsewhere, the much improved Roxy Flyer (25/1) faces a big step up in class and trip after winning over eleven furlongs at Goodwood last year. While Gallic Star (40/1) and Bramalea (50/1) face big steps up in class following some disappointing efforts this season.
