Amour Propre and Masamah are set to renew their rivalry in Thursday's King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. The pair met at York earlier this month, with Masamah taking a narrow victory for Kevin Ryan, although it is Amour Propre who is a narrow favourite at odds of 4/1 with Ladbrokes for this week's five furlong dash.
There is plenty of quality amongst the twelve runners for Thursday's Group Two race and Henry Candy will be hoping Amour Propre can rediscover the form of two years ago that led Candy to claim the speedy gelding was one of the best he had ever trained. The 2009 Palace House winner endured a tough season last year though as he finished well down the field in all three outings. His narrow defeat to Masamah at York on his seasonal reappearance a few weeks ago has raised hopes he can turn the tables.
Masamah (5/1) claimed victory by a neck that day, although we fancy Amour Propre could well reverse that result as he looks to have plenty more to give. Kevin Ryan's Exceed and Excel gelding is actually a two time winner at York so far this year, although the 5-year-old would prefer the rain to stay away. Faster ground is the order of the day for Ryan's leading hope, with stablemate Breathless Kiss less fancied at odds of 40/1.
Sir Michael Stoute enters the 2009 King George winner, Kingsgate Native, and the 6-year-old gelding could be right in the mix if he can rediscover that sort of form. There was a glimmer of his best when second in the Temple Stakes on his seasonal reappearance, but his struggles in headgear in the last three outings suggests the 6/1 shot might struggle to challenge here.
Of more interest could be Ed McMahon's Noble Storm, who is available at 5/1 with Ladbrokes.com. The 5-year-old was a winner of a Newbury handicap earlier this season and has since won a Haydock listed event in May with a great deal to spare, and on that outing he certainly shouldn't be ruled out.
Meanwhile, David Elsworth's Swiss Diva (11/2) was a dual Group Three winner in France last year, although the 5-year-old mare has only had one run in the past eight months and connections will be hoping for a bit of cut in the ground.
In contrast, Group Therapy will want faster ground as the gelding bids to go one better for new trainer David Barron. The 6-year-old was runner up to Borderlescott in this race last year for Jeremy Noseda to cap a fine 2010, although the 12/1 punt has struggled to make an impression this year.
Elsewhere, Beyond Desire (12/1) arrives on the back of a career best second in a listed event at Sandown last time out, while the front running Golden Destiny (16/1) will look to improve on four runner-up finishes, including a narrow Group Three defeat, from last year.
Humidor, third in a Sandown Group Three last time out, can be backed at odds of 12/1 with Ladbrokes, although George's Baker's gelding has plenty to find in this company. As do Stone of Folca (25/1) and Rain Delayed (25/1), and it could well be an opportunity for Amour Propre to turn the tables on Masamah.
