A full field of sixteen has been declared for Thursday's Goodwood Cup and it is Godolphin's Opinion Poll who heads the betting at 9/2 with William Hill. There is a strong cast for the Group Two race though and dual-purpose performer Overturn has opted to take his chance in this 2 mile flat race rather than the jumps of the Galway Hurdle.
Mahmood Al Zarooni's Opinion Poll looks to take all the beating here as the 5-year-old bids for a first win since joining Godolphin from the stables of Michael Jarvis. The impressive stayer has run very well thus far when placing three times at the Dubai Carnival and he chased home Fame And Glory in the Royal Ascot Gold Cup last time out. This looks an easier task than his Ascot outing and we fancy he will keep on improving.
Manighar was five lengths back from Opinion Poll at Ascot and has plenty to find from that day, with Hills pricing the gelding at 6/1. It was a tough task for Luca Cumani's 5-year-old at Ascot in tough conditions though, and the globe-trotting French entry should enjoy the drop back in trip.
Meanwhile, Mick Channon's Montaff (25/1) also enjoyed a decent run at Ascot, as the Montjeu gelding finished runner-up in the Northumberland Plate to make it two second places finishes from his last two outings over two miles.
Mark Johnston, a five time winner of the Goodwood Cup, enters 10/1 chance Fox Hunt as the progressive gelding steps up in trip and class after picking up wins over a mile and a half at Epson and Ascot recently.
The big talking point in the build up to the race though was Donald McCain Jr's decision to enter Overturn on the flat rather than go to Galway to defend his Galway Hurdle title. The ground at Goodwood was deemed to be more suitable as the 7-year-old bids for a first Group win on the flat. The 16/1 shot did make all to win the Chester Cup, but was disappointing when sixth in the Northumberland last time out.
Tastahil was runner-up to Overturn in the Chester Cup and is available at 10/1 with WilliamHill.com this week, while the front running Chiberta King (12/1) steps up in class for Andrew Balding.
Of some interest could be Ed Dunlop's strong stayer Red Cadeaux (10/1), who has been a listed handicap and a Group Three winner at the Curragh in two of last three outings and he looks sure to stay the trip. Bergo (14/1), another dual-purpose performer, could be worth an each way-look after the 8-year-old ran a blinder to finish ahead of Opinion Poll in a Group Three at Meydan in March last time out.
Clive Cox's Electrolyser is another that should receive plenty of backing from 14/1 after the 6-yeare-old finished second to Illustrious Blue in this race last year, and he will try headgear for the first time after finishing third to Chiberta King at Sandown last time out.
Swingkeel (25/1), Blue Bajan (20/1), Aaim To Prosper (20/1) and Allied Powers (14/1) all face a big step up in class on Thursday, while the veteran 10-year-old Geordieland, lightly raced in recent years, remains an outside 20/1 punt as he bids to rediscover the Group Two winning form of five years ago.
