What had once upon a time looked like a cracking renewal, the Group One, Sussex Stakes, the feature race on day Two at Glorious Goodwood has turned, it seems, into a two horse race between Canford Cliffs and last year’s winner, Rip Van Winkle. Bookmakers have the two clear of the rest of the field, with Bet365 having Canford Cliffs as the 4/6 favourite with Rip Van Winkle at 9/4.
it has to be said that the Richard Hannon trained, Canford Cliffs comes into the race in fantastic form after a couple of early season disappointments. After finishing third in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas in early May, he bounced back to win the Irish equivalent and has since won the Group One St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He now hopes to go one better than stable companion, Paco Boy in 2009 and win this.

it is difficult to know what to make of the Aidan O’Brien trained, Rip van Winkle so far this year. The stable reports have been extremely encouraging, with high expectations that he would be a better 4 year old than at 3. However, he disappointed badly in his one run this season, in the Group One, Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot where he could only manage 6th place behind the fast finishing pair of Goldikova and Paco Boy. It was form that would not be good enough to get the better of Canford Cliffs and maybe even one or two others in this field.

that said of course, it is well known that Ballydoyle horses generally need a run before getting to their best, which hopefully means that the ’Rip’ will be in good enough form to make this race the showpiece event it should be. Of the others, only Premio Loco offers any interest, trained these days by Chris wall, the Premio Loco comes to the race having just won the Group Two Summer Mile at Ascot earlier this month and the Group Three, Criterion Stakes at Newmarket in June. However, this is a step up in class for the six year old and a place bet at odds of 7/1 with bet365 may be the best option here.
