Leopardstown Handicap Chase Odds: Seabass Likely to go off Favourite

The Leopardstown Handicap Chase over 2m5f this Saturday looks as competitive a race as ever with any number in with decent chances and with decent odds of finding the winners enclosure. As it stands 22 will go to post and will be headed in the weights by the 2011 winner, Rare Bob from the Dessie Hughes stable.

Rare Bob of course won 12 months ago carrying top weight on soft to heavy ground and might find conditions will suit once again on Saturday. Although he has done very little since winning last year, the ten year old on his day can give the best of them a decent run for their money, it has to be said however that he is not being backed with any great enthusiasm despite having good value odds currently of 12/1 with Bet365 . He is possibly one for each way backers to consider this year.

One that is being backed however is the current favourite Seabass who is a general 7/1 shot to win the race. This 9 year old remains on a good mark, despite winning back to back handicap chases this season at Punchestown and Limerick and on paper at least, he looks a worthy favourite.

Also being backed is the Charlie Swan trained mare, Stephanie Kate who now has odds of 8/1. She has taken to fences extremely well it seems without yet winning, however she did finish second in a Grade 3 Novice Chase behind the talented First Lieutenant at Cork back in November. Although she was receiving a stone in weight that day it was still a very good run against a very classy horse.

Stonemaster Has been backed in from 16/1 to 11/1 over the last 24 hours and could be the big gamble of the race. Trained by Dessie Hughes this seven year old only has bits and pieces of form this season thus far but he is said to be in great form at home and has been laid out for a big tilt at this valuable handicap.

Harold’s Cross showed some exciting chasing form during the summer winning three times in as many starts between May and June, but he has been running in hurdle races lately. He warmed up for this with a win at Fairyhouse in a 2½ mile hurdle in November, which he followed up by finishing second behind Askthemaster in a handicap hurdle at Leopardstown last month. Trained by Christy Roche this 7 year old has odds currently of 8/1 with bet365.

Montan trained by Alan Martin has useful form over both hurdles and fences and ran particularly well last time when fourth in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown at Christmas. If he can improve on that performance then he would have to be in with a decent chance in this and he looks a decent price too with odds of 12/1 also from bet 365.

It is good to see 2011 Irish Grand National winner returning to the bigger obstacles after a couple of decent runs in hurdle events so far this season. Organisedconfusion ran a blinder with Nina Carberry on board in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse last season, winning by five lengths, but how much his weight of 11-07 will affect him on Saturday remains to be seen. He was third in this race behind Rare Bob last year but was then only carrying 10-05, but at least he will have Nina Carberry back on board, who appears to have the knack of getting the best out of him.

This race is clearly an extremely difficult one to call and punters are advised to pay close attention to the betting trends when they begin in earnest on Saturday morning. There are sure to be plenty of market movers up and down the scale and it might pay to get on board any major gamble that presents itself.
