There's an early start at Cheltenham on Saturday as the racecourse hosts it's Trials Day for the Festival in March. First up is the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial which has been won in the past by such names as Katchit, Franchoek and Walkon who went on to perform well in the big juvenile race at Cheltenham. This year's renewal brings together two of the leading ante-post betting contenders for the Triumph Hurdle. Favourite is the Alan King trained Grumeti at 6/4 with bookmaker Bet365, whilst also well fancied is Baby Mix, with the pair both joint favourites for the Triumph Hurdle in March.
Grumeti is an interesting prospect who was drastically cut for the Triumph Hurdle just ten days ago without even winning. The Alan King trained four year old was cantering away with a juvenile hurdle at Newbury before clipping the last hurdle and slipping over. The bookmakers however were impressed enough with the performance prior to that blemish and he goes for a confidence building run on Saturday. Rated 84 on the flat, Grumeti won on his debut over hurdles at Taunton in December beating former Derby runner Ted Spread by fourteen lengths in the process. The horse is trained and owned by the same connections who won this race with Walkon three years ago and he's currently 8/1 joint favourite for the Triumph Hurdle in March.
7/4 chance Baby Mix returns to the scene of his one and only run this season where he upset the Paul Nicholls trained Hinterland to score by seven lengths over course and distance in December. The four year old by Al Namix is trained by Tom George and was a French import in the Autumn. The juvenile is 8/1 joint-favourite for the JCB Triumph Hurdle withBet365 and those odds are sure to take a tumble were he to win here.
Hollow Tree is the entry of Donald McCain and is looking for a hat-trick of wins on Saturday following two wins in Wales, the latter on Welsh National day when he won by two and a half lengths in the mud in the Grade 1 Champions Finale at Chepstow. That was his third win over fences with his only loss coming here at Cheltenham behind the aforementioned Hinterland in November's Paddy Power meeting. The top rated horse is available to back at 11/2 withBet 365on Saturday.
Paul Nicholls runs Pearl Swan (10/1) for this race and Ruby Walsh takes the ride. Another French import, the juvenile won on debut in England earlier in the month when scoring by four lengths at Taunton on good to soft ground. Venetia Williams trains 11/1 shot Tango De Juilley, a two time runner up at Newbury.
The outsider of the field is 25/1 chance Colebrook trained by Renee Robeson. He's the second highest rated horse in this race by default and was rated as high as 72 on the flat. The juvenile by Shamardal was a winner last time out at the beginning of the year at Sandown, a significant improvement but you'd have to think he needs to improve further to trouble these.
6/4 Grumeti
7/4 Baby Mix
11/2 Hollow Tree
10/1 Pearl Swan
11/1 Tango De Juilley
25/1 Colebrooke
