Star stayer Big Buck's bids to make it fifteen wins in a row on Cheltenham Trials Day on Saturday when he goes in search for his second Cleeve Hurdle victory. Unbelievably, the Paul Nicholls trained gelding is still only nine years old and if this season's performances are anything to go by he's a shoe in to record record fourth straight win in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Festival in March. Bookmaker Stan James go best price 1/4 about there being another 1 next to Big Buck's form figures after 3.40pm on Saturday afternoon and it's difficult to see this not being the case.
Of course, like any National Hunt race where there are obstancles there is always a chance a horse, whatever the price could come a cropper. However, in Big Buck's case it was exactly that, when unseating rider Sam Thomas in the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup which led to trainer Nicholls sending the horse back hurdling. The rest as they say is history and the nine year old has gone on to win fourteen hurdles in a row, all but one of those victories in graded company.
During this time Big Buck's has amassed three wins in a row in the World Hurdle and another win on Saturday will see his odds shorten even further for his fourth attempt in March. Stan James currently go 8/15 about Big Buck's for the World Hurdle and it's difficult to see who could beat him given Grands Crus' defection to novice chasing this season.
Second favourite Mourad has tried once unsuccessfully to lower the colours of Big Buck's when finishing third in behind him and Grands Crus in last season's World Hurdle. He was a clear third favourite for that race last season but has struggled to get his nose in front since and his ante-post price for the Stayers is as big as 25/1 in places. Stan James have the Willie Mullins trained seven year old at odds of 5/1 for Saturday's contest and he makes the trip to England off the back of two runners-up finishes behind Voler La Vedette on his last two starts. The mare Voler La Vedette had her colours lowered on Thursdasy when losing out to Zaidpour at Gowran Park so Mourad could be opposable in the without Big Buck's market.
Third favourite at 9/1 is the David Pipe trained Dynaste who finished a well beaten fourth in his last performance in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot behind Big Buck's. The six year old is highly regarded by his trainer and only has a couple of pounds to make up on Mourad based on official ratings.
There's a gap in the betting for this six runner race then as Big Buck's stablemate Five Dream is available to back at 20/1 with Stan James. The eight year old trained by Nicholls' has finished second twice this season in behind Big Buck's and at the price could be a decent bet in a straight forecast if the 1/4 about the favourite is too short. Restless Harry continues to go over the small obstacles after he didn't take to jumping earlier this season and can be backed at 25/1, whilst Accross The Bay is the 100/1 outsider.
1/4 Big Buck's
5/1 Mourad
9/1 Dynaste
20/1 Five Dream
25/1 Restless Harry
100/1 Accross The Bay
