Formerly known as the MCR Hurdle, this weekend’s Boylesports.com Hurdle over two miles is the feature race at Leopardstown on Saturday which has attracted, as it usually does, a large field of runners. They are headed in the betting by the Charlie Byrnes trained, Scottish Boogie, who had a couple of promising runs as a juvenile before being aimed at handicap racing. There is no doubt that the five year old has ability but he has yet to win in Handicap company which makes his odds of 6/1 with Paddy Power look a little bit amiss, particularly as favourites do not have a very good record in the race.
Better value we believe can be found in the claims of 10/1 shot Plan A from the Gordon Elliott stable who appears to have been laid out to run a big race in this. Although only winning once in handicap company, this 5 year old has ran well in graded company in the past and he should be in peak form after running a good race at Limerick last time out.
Excellent value can also be found with Jessie Harrington’s runner, Citizenship, who currently has odds of 12/1 also with paddy power. He finished in ¾ length in front of Scottish Boogie at Leopardstown when the two met over Christmas and is only a pound worse off in the weights in this. Harrington saddled the winner of this in 2006 and by all accounts she believes that Citizenship has a similar chance.
Unlike most top weights, Staying Article is very unexposed, with his only outing in handicaps coming at Fairyhouse in early December which he won by ¾ length from the Alan Martin trained, Montan. At 16/1 he would have to be on the ‘decent chance’ list but it is pointed out that only one horse in the last ten years has won this race with more than 11 stone on his back.
One for each way backers to consider would most certainly be Askthemaster who has odds of 16/1 who was a winner on this course on Boxing Day. Although 7lbs worse off, the 12 year old has plenty of hard races behind him and may have a little too much experience than most in this field.
Not to be ruled out is the Charlie Swan trained, Make A Track, who ran well in Grade 2 company back in November and was a winner last time in a Novice Hurdle at Gowran Park in December. He comes to the race on a good mark and from a stable that is beginning to find some form.
Another potential each way sort is the Martin Brassil’s Moville, who went off as the favourite last time out when third in a decent handicap chase over two miles at Naas earlier this month. He was clearly fancied to win that which is why it might pay punters to keep him on a watch and brief as this race nears. He currently has odds of 33/1 with Paddy power.
