Doncaster's big race on Saturday is the Sky Bet Chase off at 2.50pm. This three mile listed handicap was formally known as the Great Yorkshire Chase and past winners include Simon and Big Fella Thanks, the latter of whom went on to finish sixth in the Grand National later that season. It's the Aintree showpiece which is in mind for a number of Saturday's runners and is those who hold entries run well here you can expect their ante-post prices to take a tumble.
Favourite for the race is the Nicky Henderson trained Shakalakaboomboom who is best price 13/2 with the sponsors SkyBet. The eight year old is unbeaten this season having won a Grade B handicap chase at the Punchestown Festival way back in May before scoring in a three mile and one furlong Grade A chase at Cheltenham last month. That performance at Cheltenham gained quotes of 20/1 for the Grand National in April. He improved nine pounds for the win at Cheltenham and he could be well handicapped here.
It's a very open betting feel to the race and second favourite with Sky Bet is the Emma Lavelle trained Qianshan Leader. The eight year old is another horse who comes here off the back of two wins and he's enjoying a good season most notably winning over course and distance here in December. He's gone up eight pounds for that victory but will be only carrying 10-8 on Saturday which could be key.
Four horses are available to back at 8/1 and amongst them is the ante-post favourite for the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at Cheltenham. Galaxy Rock trained by Jonjo O'Neill will be ridden by A P McCoy on Saturday as he makes his comeback from injury. The eight year old has come down a couple of pounds having pulled up in the Welsh National and races off 11-4 at the weekend. Another 8/1 chance with the sponsors is the Ian Williams trained Wayward Prince. The eight year old finished third in last season's RSA Chase at Cheltenham but hasn't really shown much this year. He pulled up in the Hennessy Gold Cup in November before finishing well beaten at Wetherby last time out in the Rowland Meyrick Chase on Boxing Day.
Calgary Bay scored his first win for over three years when landing a Grade 3 handicap chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day last time out. The Henrietta Knight trained nine year old has gone up to a mark of 151 for that win and with the stable in form could go close again here.
Aiteen Thirtythree makes up the quartet priced at 8/1 with Sky Bet and the second season chaser needs to find a spark to ignite his season here. Going into the RSA Chase last year off the back of three wins he pulled up at Cheltenham and after giving Somersby a decent race at Kempton on his seasonal debut, he disappointed when sent off favourite in the Hennessy last time out finishing eleventh.
Further down the bettingare Cape Tribulation and I'msingingtheblues both at 14/1. local trainer Malcolm Jefferson runs the eight year old Cape Tribulation who was fifth behind Calgary Bay in that New Year's Day handicap chase at Cheltenham. I'msingingtheblues carries top weight for David Pipe and returns to the racecourse just a week after being touched off by a head versus Tatenen at Ascot last week.
