Registered as the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase, the Williamhill.com Novices' Chase is a Grade 2 contest run over two miles at Kempton on Tuesday. Very much like the Feltham Novices Chase on Boxing Day, this contest will pit two of the leading Cheltenham Festival hopes together for the first time. Arkle favourite Peddlers Cross is the 4/5 favourite with the sponsors William Hill but he's face his toughest task yet, with the likes of Sprinter Sacre and Menorah also well fancied in the Arkle Trophy ante-post betting.
Donald McCain's high class hurdler is a former Cheltenham Festival winner, scoring in the 2010 Neptune Novices' Hurdle. He fould Hurricane Fly too good for him last season in the Champion Hurdle but second place there he is one of the most exciting chasing prospects in training this season. The six year old has had a gentle start to his chasing career, winning twice in modest company at Bangor On Dee. His jumping has been exemplary however and it's easy to see why the bookmakers fancy him to win here.
The Nicky Henderson trained Sprinter Sacre is another exciting prospect to come out of the hurdling ranks. Third in last season's Supreme Novices' Hurdle he won on debut over fences this season landing a race at Doncaster earlier this month by twenty-four lengths. William Hill make the five year old 15/8 to win here, in what looks like a fascinating race.
The two head the betting for the Arkle Trophy at next year's Cheltenham Festival. This champion two mile chase also has Menorah near the head of the betting at 10/1. The Phillip Hobbs trained six year old won the 2010 Supreme Novices' Hurdle before being well fancied to follow up with the Champion Hurdle last season. Winning the International Hurdle just over a year ago, things have gone awry for the horse finishing a well beaten fifth in the Champion Hurdle before finishing fourth in Punchestown's equivalent in May. He unseated rider Richard Johnson on his debut over fences at Exeter this season before returning to hurdling last time out, beaten into fourth at Cheltenham in the International hurdle earlier this month. He's 6/1 to win on Tuesday but it would be a leap of faith given his form and the strengths of the market leaders.
Also at 6/1 is For Non Stop trained by Nick Williams. The six year old was just touched off by leading Arkle fancy Al Ferof at Sandown in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novice Chase. A repeat of that kind of form could see him squeeze into the places, but it's difficult to see him good enough to beat either of the two market leaders based on his hurdling form.
4/5 Peddlers Cross
15/8 Sprinter Sacre
6/1 Menorah
6/1 For Non Stop
25/1 Alasi
66/1 Harry Hunt
