Six runners line up for the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown on Tuesday. This two mile, one furlong contest has been a big part of the Irish racing season in the past with Queen Mother Champion Chase winners Big Zeb and Moscow Flyer both dual winners of this race. The former is favourite for the 2011 renewal having won the race twelve months ago and the sponsors Paddy Power go 8/11 about his chances on Tuesday.
This year's race is a veritable who's who of Irish two mile chasers with quite a few having a point to prove following disappointments. Even the market leader Big Zeb is bidding to bounce back from last year's defeat at Cheltenham where he lost his Champion Chase crown to fellow Irish trained horse Sizing Europe. Colm Murphy's ten year old did exact instant revend over Henry De Bromhead's Sizing Europe when the pair met at the Punchestown Meeting last May and has since gone on to win on his only start so far this season at Navan, in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase. He held Noble Prince by two lengths that day and he's the obvious favourite in this field, although the odds on price looks a shade short. He's 6/1 second favourite in the betting for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham and that price is sure to take a tumble if he wins well here.
Second favourite is the Willie Mullins' trained Golden Silver. This horse has been prolific in Ireland having won eleven times over the big fences. He won on his only start this season by twenty eight lengths at Cork in the Hilly Way Chase, but that was an uncompetitive race and he didn't seem to jump well without normal jockey Paul Townend in the saddle. He was beaten into fourth in the Punchestown Grade 1 behind Bif Zeb in May but the nine year old seems to reserve his best performances for this time of year when there's more cut in the ground. At 4/1 with Paddy Power he could offer some value in the race.
Seven year old Noble Prince was an excellent winner of the two and a half mile Jewson Novices' Chase at last season's Cheltenham Festival but he was a beaten favourite on his one and only start this season, beaten two lengths by Big Zeb in the aforementioned Fortria Chase at Navan. The Paul Nolan trained seven year old by Montjeu has a bit of a point to prove following that defeat but this could again be a big ask given the shorter than ideal trip. Paddy Power have him as 5/1 third favourite for the race, whilst he's 14/1 for the Queen Mother in March, with the Ryanair Chase probably the more likely route where he's 6/1 favourite.
Further down the betting is former Arkle winner Forpadydeplasterer who is now ten runs without a win since that day in 2009, although he amasses an astonishing run of eight second places within that sequence. At odds of 10/1 it's difficult to see him really getting across the line first. The Tommy Cooper trained nine year old was third in the Fortria Chase and is likely to find at least a couple too good for him in this.
Saludos and is a 20/1 with the sponsors. A talented novice chaser last season, he hasn't pulled up any trees this season to date whilst Scotsirish returns to a two mile chase following a few runs on the cross country for trainer Willie Mullins.
8/11 Big Zeb
4/1 Golden Silver
5/1 Noble Prince
10/1 Forpadydeplasterer
20/1 Saludos
25/1 Scotsirish
