Big Buck's remains the hot odds on favourite for Saturday's Long Distance Hurdle with the bookmakers, despite jockey Noel Fehily suffering a suspected broken wrist on Friday. The Paul Nicholls trained horse is industry best priced odds of 2/7 with Victor Chandler bookmakers and remains the stand out horse in a field of six.
There was some drama on Friday when Big Buck's jockey Noel Fehily suffered the wrist injury in a fall from Rivaliste at Newbury which definitely rules him out of racing on Saturday. Fehily himself had been filling in for several Paul Nicholls trained horses following Ruby Walsh's broken leg, so Tony McCoy will ride Big Buck's in the Long Distance Hurdle.
Such is the quality of Big Buck's compared to the rest of the field that a change in jockey is unlikely to have much effect on the race at Newbury, and the 7-year-old is attempting to extend a winning run of eight over hurdles. However, there are rumblings that he could be at his most vulnerable on his seasonal debut and there is a general feeling that he is at his best in a competitive field so there is a very small chance he could be caught out on Saturday.
The Paul Nicholls trained horse won the Long Distance Hurdle last year and is of course a dual World Hurdle winner. He won the World Hurdle in 2010 by three and a quarter lengths from Time For Rupert to follow up his win in 2009, where he beat ante-post favourite Punchestowns by one and three quarter lengths at Cheltenham Festival.
The field for Saturday's race appears to have been scared off by the presence of Big Buck's with just five other runners. Duc De Regniere appears to be the most likely to offer a challenge and his odds of winning the race are 11/2 with VCBet. The Nicky Henderson trained horse came a disappointing fourth in the John Smith's Hurdle at his most recent outing at Wetherby in October though. The 8-year-old came third behind Big Buck's in the 2009 Long Distance hurdle and won the race in 2008.
Elsewhere Kayf Aramis is industry best priced odds of 10/1 with victorchandler.com and Nigel Twiston-Davies' 8-year-old came runner up in the John Smith's Hurdle at Wetherby. Paul Hobbs' trained Duke of Lucca is 14/1 with Victor Chandler for Saturday, despite the 5-year-old performing poorly at the Tote Solver Trophy at Chepstow in October. He had been favourite for the race but was well of the pace and finished 10th, with Any Given Day the winner. The rest of the field for the Long Distance Hurdle field is made up by Arcalis and Spider Boy.
2/7 Big Buck's
11/2 Duc De Regniere
10/1 Kayf Aramis
14/1 Duke of Lucca
33/1 Arcalis
750/1 Spider Boy
