Celebration Mile Odds: Dubawi Gold Can Confirm Class at Goodwood

With Strong Suit being pulled out of the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood on Saturday there will be many that will think that the race is now at the mercy of the Saeed Bin Suroor trained, Poets Voice, who is looking for a repeat success having won the race 12 months ago. Certainly Ladbrokes Bookmakers make him the jolly with odds currently of 6/4 they go 7/2 Dubawi Gold and offer 5/1 about Beacon Lodge.

Poets Voice in fact has not been out so far this season but was campaigned earlier in the year at the Dubai Carnival where he finished second behind Wigmore Hall in the Group 2 Jebel Hatta over 9 furlongs. He then went on to run very disappointingly in the Dubai World Cup over ten furlongs at the end of March finishing in last place some 21 lengths behind the winner, Victoire Pisa. This is hardly the form with which to commend him as the likely winner of this race this year but should he find last year’s form with which he won this race as well as the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last September then he would have a seriously big chance. He would also seem to have the ground on his side, which is likely to ride Good to Soft.

The Clive Cox trained Beacon Lodge who can also go on softish ground is a very consistent sort who has been placed in his last four starts all in pattern company. However the six year old has not seen a winners enclosure since he won the Listed Spring Trophy over seven furlongs at Haydock Park back in May, which certainly raises question marks about his ability to win this. He has never won at Group Two level before and his last Group win came in a Group Three in France over two years ago.

Based on the form shown in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, then the Richard Hannon trained, Dubawi Gold should be in with a great chance to win this on Saturday. He finished second in both of those classics but his form in his two races since has not reflected that ability. In the first of those he finished sixth of nine behind Frankel in the Group One St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and in the second he finished fourth in the Group Two Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, a race which Beacon Lodge finished just over a length ahead of him in second place. It would appear that he might prefer a bit of cut in the ground, something which he will get plenty of on Saturday and trainer Hannon is convinced that he still has plenty in the tank to win.

Clive Wall’s seven year old, Premio Loco has attracted some attention in the market where he is now a 7/1 chance with Ladbrokes.com but on all recent form then he has plenty to find with the rest of the market leaders. He did run very well on good to firm ground in the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury when third of seven beaten 4 lengths by the now retired Canford Cliffs. However his last two starts in Group Three company he has been found wanting and he would need to run up to his highest mark of 119 to have any chance.

Of the rest only Set The Trend offers a closer look as it would appear that Emerald Commander is definately the Godolphin second string as Frankie Dettori will be riding the favourite.

Not an easy one to call, but given the lack of exposure this season so far of Poets Voice then the preference is to back Dubawi Gold. The three year old will have the ground on his side which should help him to return to the form shown earlier this season and as a dual Classic runner up he should be winning races of this type. He also has been more than reasonably priced and with odds of 7/2 he represents excellent value.
