After managing to get into the race, Bahrain Storm looks likely to go off as the firm favourite to win the Galway Festival feature, the Galway Plate on Wednesday. Trained by Pat Flynn, the eight year old has odds currently of 5/1 with Paddy Power who like his trainer do not expect his lack of experience in chases to have any significant bearing on his performance. The eight year old won the Galway Hurdle at the Festival back in 2009 and his win at Killarney a fortnight ago earned him his entry for this. He comes into the race on a good mark, in good form from a yard who are more than bullish about his prospects and following a number of good performances on the Ballybrit track
Next in the betting with odds of around 8/1 is the Dermot Weld trained, Majestic Concorde, who was third last year behind Finger On The Pulse. Weld, whose name is synonymous with the Galway Festival has made it clear that this year he is going for quality wins rather than quantity and includes the ‘Plate’ as his principle target. Last seen unseating his rider at the Canal Turn in the Aintree Grand National in April, the eight year old will be nice and fresh for his attempt where although he is carrying 11-4 he should have sufficient class to run a big race.
The very progressive Rebel Du Maquis a six year old from the stable of the UK’s Champion trainer, Paul Nicholls is another who looks like he has big chances. Nicholls saddled a six year old Oslot to win this race in 2008 and Rebel Du Maquis has a very similar profile and has been prepared for this race in a very similar way. A sound jumper who has hacked up in his last two outings there is much confidence behind this horse who currently has odds of 10/1with Paddy Power
Another English raider comes in the form of the David Pipe trained, Qulinton a huge 19 length winner ten days ago in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. There is a chance that the Galway Plate may have come a little too quick for him, but he came out of his Market Rasen run in good form and will enjoy a return to better ground at Galway. He is steady in the market currently with odds of 14/1.
Blazing Tempo from the Willie Mullins yard is a seven year old with a fair amount of class behind her. It was thought at one time that she may become a Grade One winning mare, after several solid performances in Graded company; indeed she has won a couple of Beginners Chase’s at Grade three level in 2010. She was fifth in the Grade Two Jewsons Novices Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March and last time out she was seen finishing second behind the highly rated Wishfull Thinking in the Mick the Tent Memorial Handicap Chase at the Punchestown Festival in May. This all represents excellent form to bring into a race that is, in all truth, beneath her real level. She is currently a 9/1 shot with Paddy Power Bookmakers.
