Needless to say, the Galway Festival is a major meeting for top trainer, Dermot Weld, who will no doubt have his runners well primed for yet another successful campaign. Punters therefore are obviously advised to check out the Weld runners of every race, particularly those on the flat ridden by Pat Smullen, who incidentally is our tip to be Top Overall Jockey at the meeting, for which he can backed with Paddy Power at odds of 4/5. The likely top jump jockey over the seven day Festival is Paul Townend, due to the absence of the injured Ruby Walsh. Townend is quoted at ‘Even Money’, with next best in the market being Robbie McNamara at 7/1.
The two big feature races of the week, the Galway Plate and Galway Hurdle, have attracted above average fields this year, with a strong contingent over from the UK. In the ‘Galway Plate’ we believe there is a strong case for the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained, Grand Slam Hero (12/1 with Paddy power.) 2010 has been a great year for Twiston-Davies and in Grand Slam Hero who is looking for a four timer having won his last three, all in good quality races. The yard have had the Galway Plate set as the horse’s target all year and he can give a punters a real boost by going in at around 12/1.

In the Galway Hurdle we are tipping up another raider from the Uk, this time Overturn, trained by Donald McCain. Winner of the Northumberland Plate last month, this 6 year old is at the’ top of his game’ and comes from a yard bang in form who have been targeting this race for some time.
