The third night of the Dubai Carnival at the Meydan racecourse in Dubai takes place on Thursday with the Group Two Al Rashidiya being the main feature of a seven race card. The full card is listed below.
The opening race is the Friday Trophy which is raced on the Tapeta and will see the return to the track of Golden Sword, winner of the 2009 Group 3 Chester Vase before running in fifth place behind the legendary Sea The Stars in the 2009 Epsom Derby. In those days of course he was trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien, but these days he is under the wing of Dubai master trainer, Mike de Kock and he might be the one to follow in this.
Happy Dubai winner last week at the Carnival of the five furlong Al Hadeerah Trophy will try his look over six furlongs this week in second race of the day the GNB Sprint Handicap. Frankie Dettori gets the ride with last week’s jockey, Ahmed Ajtebi booked to ride Rileyskeepingthefaith for Godolphin.
The third race of the night will see the Mick Channon trained Halicarnassus look to go one better than the second place he picked up over course and distance in the Evidenza handicap a fortnight ago on the first night of the Carnival. In that race he was caught close home but was in need of the run and could a very good thing. There is plenty of contenders however in this race , including Prizefighting of Godolphin he was just behind Halicarnassus in the Evidenza and the pair trained by Mike De Kock of Happy Valley and King Of Rome.
Godolphin are putting up a big challenge in the Wheels Handicap, the fourth race of the night, the pick of them looks to be Age Of Reason who will have number one jockey, Frankie Dettori on board.
The Conditions race, the Insideout Trophy at 5.10 looks to be one of the most open races of the day, with several in with chances. It is a difficult one to call but if the price is right on the day Enak for Saeed Bin Suroor and Dettori might be the one particularly after his good second in the Master Collection Handicap two weeks ago.
Presvis trained by Luca Cumani will have his first run of the New Year in the day’s feature race, the Group Two Al Rashidiya. The Latest Odds Comparison For Tonights Big Race is now available. Al Rashidiya Latest Odds
The seven year old has not been seen since finishing down the field in the Group One Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot last June and although he will be in need of the run, the Cumani stable are quietly confident of a big performance on the Meydan turf. He is said to have enjoyed his stay in Dubai and he won very impressively over course and distance last year when taking the Group Two Jebel Hatta, which certainly makes him one of the main contenders for this. It is hoped that Ryan Moore will take the ride.
Amongst those in opposition will be Steele Tango a short head winner here two weeks ago over course and distance in the Master Collection Handicap, the six year old will have to step up in class to win this but he has plenty of stable confidence behind him to do just that. Trained by Roger Teal, Steele Tango was second in the 2010 Cambridgeshire and third in the 2010 Group Darley Stakes at Newmarket, a race which he had won in 2009.
Godolphin will try out their 6 year old Caymans, who has run with credit at Group One level in Australia but was a very disappointing 6th of nine in a Conditions race at Nottingham last November, which is hardly the form to mark him down as main danger in this but we all know the Godolphin record and he is said to be in good form and that jockey, Frankie Dettori is very hopeful.
Irish Flame, trained by the Mike De Kock will have to give weight away if he is to get home, but he has won at Grade 2 level in South Africa and last time out he was second in a very good Grade 1 where he went down by a length to stable companion, Bold Silvano.
In the final race of the day the Xpress Trophy over 1 mile, Hujaylea looks a good bet to go one better than the second place he earned on the Carnival Day One, in the Dolce Vita Handicap. Trained by Mick Halford and ridden by Shane Foley he is sure to improve and should be a good price.
