There have been 19 runners declared for Saturday's prestigious Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, and it is two time winner Denman who still heads favouritism in the ante-post betting. Denman is currently at industry best priced odds of 4/1 with Paddy Power bookmakers, and if successful in the weekend's feature race he would make history by achieving an unprecedented third win in the Hennessy Gold Cup.
Denman won in 2007 before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and won again at Newbury in 2009. Paul Nicholls trained Denman tops the weights and will race at 11 stone and 12 pounds, which is a good stone more than any of his nearest rivals and is in fact the same weight he carried during his 2007 and 2009 victories. Denman's last two races resulted in a second place finish behind Imperial Commander in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham Festival and a fourth place at the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup. He will be paired with Sam Thomas due to Ruby Walsh's injury and it remains to be seen if the 10-year-old is still as good as ever. It will be quite an achievement to win a record breaking third Hennessy Gold Cup, especially considering the £150,000 race is usually regarded as one for up and coming horses.
One of those up and coming horses is Weird Al who challenges Denman for ante-post favouritism and is currently at shortened odds of 5/1 with paddypower.com. The 7-year-old was hugely impressive as a novice last season and went through the season unbeaten until injury in February ruled him out of the RSA Chase, a race he had been favourite for. If fully recovered, and it looks like he might be after his dead heat with Little Josh at Carlisle in October, then he could be well worth a punt to win and deny Denman a third Hennessy Cup win.
Elsewhere there are several others that could stay the distance at Newbury and Pandorama leads the bid for a first Irish win in the handicap race for 30 years at industry best priced odds of 8/1 with Paddy Power. He has been well backed by his trainer Noel Meade to make an impression on Saturday and he is 8 pounds out of the handicap, and in three career races over fences he has won two Grade 1s. Also well up in the betting is 7/1 shot Diamond Harry who disappointingly pulled up at the RSA Chase in March, and Burton Port who is 15/2 and was runner-up in the same RSA Chase.
4/1 Denman (11-12)
5/1 Weird Al (10-0)
7/1 Diamond Harry (10-0)
15/2 Burton Port (10-0)
8/1 Pandorama (10-0)
12/1 Big Fella Thanks (10-0)
12/1 Taranis (10-4)
14/1 Madison Du Berlais (10-1)
16/1 Carruthers (10-0)
16/1 Neptune Collonges (10-8)
16/1 China Rock (10-4)
20/1 BAR
