Top Tug to strike in competitive Ebor Handicap at York
Saturday 26th August, 2017 - 3:35pm York - Ebor Handicap
One of the most hotly-anticipated betting heats on the Flat calendar takes place on the final day of York's Ebor Festival on Saturday afternoon, as a field off 22 stayers head to the 1m 5f 188y start for the Ebor Handicap, and it's the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Flymetothestars that is the current market leader, but that four-year-old will face a whole host of lively adversaries in a mouth-watering contest.
- Eight of the last nine winners have been drawn in stall 10 or above
- Six of the last eight winners have been priced 10/1 or bigger
- Magic Circle won at Ebor Festival earlier in the week

Sent off a warm order for the Northumberland Plate, Flymetothestars could only finish third in that Newcastle marathon, and having been upped 2lbs by the handicapper for that run behind Higher Power, he will need a career best on the Knavesmire, but the 13/2 favourite with bet365 is still very lightly-raced, and could improve again, so has to be considered a major player, but a wide draw will be a huge hindrance to his chances.
Willie Mullins will saddle the interesting Ivan Grozny, who hasn't been seen on the Flat for over a year, but he was competing at a high level over hurdles recently, and will be aiming to bounce back from a tumble in the Galway Hurdle, however, he was well beaten in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot in 2016, and may find this tough, and can be ignored at 8/1 with Unibet.
Dubka is improving as the season progresses for Sir Michael Stoute, who has already had a cracking Ebor Festival, and the 10/1 chance with Paddy Power could put up a bold effort here, while Magic Circle snuck in at the bottom of the weights with a win here earlier in the week, but while the 9/1 chance with BetVictor is in decent form, this is a lot tougher than his previous contest, and it will be tough to play a prominent role.
Top Tug Can Bound To Victory
Alan King's Top Tug chased home Frontiersman three starts ago before landing an impressive victory at Goodwood in May, and the six-year-old then put up a bold effort when finishing fourth in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot, and is a major player here.
Available at 12/1 with Betfred, he will enjoy a step back up in trip, having won at Goodwood over 1m 6f, and he is better off at the weights with Star Storm (16/1 wtih Paddy Power) for this race, with that one just finishing above him at Royal Ascot in June, so from a decent stall two draw, the Barbury Castle inmate can hand his predominantly National Hunt trainer success in this valuable race.
Best Of The Rest
Roger Varian's Battersea was well beaten in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, so will enjoy a return to the handicap sphere, but the 14/1 chance with BetVictor will find this a little tough, while the top-weighted Mark Johnston-trained Soldier In Action (14/1 with Paddy Power) will find it tough to follow up a fine victory at Goodwood last time out, and may struggle.
Of the others, Nakeeta (12/1 with Sky Bet) was just touched off on his last visit to York, so could be a possible each-way player, with Wild Hacked (14/1) and Seamour (25/1) adding more depth to this contest, which should be an absolutely scintillating betting heat on a cracking day's racing.
