2010 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Odds: Cape Blanco to Maintain Ballydoyle Stranglehold

There will be five Ballydoyle representatives from the eleven runners who go to post in the 2010 Irish Derby at the Curragh as Aidan O’Brien looks to win this race for the eighth time. They are headed in the betting by Cape Blanco, who met with defeat for the first time when running very disappointingly to finish 10th in the French Derby on the 6th June. Before his French setback, Cape Blanco had won the Group 2, Dante Stakes at York where he had Epsom Derby winner and current favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Workhorse behind him. It was a very impressive performance at York and he will need to recapture that form if he is to head off the field in this. His case however is strengthened by the fact that stable jockey, Johnny Murtagh will be on board.

Bookmakers have been quick to react to the supplemented entry from the Mark Johnston yard, Monterosso, who has been steadily backed into 10/3 with Boyles from 6/1 last week. This colt was a very impressive winner of the Group 2 King Edward Vll Stakes at Royal Ascot last week and comes to Ireland in great form with a number of very bullish connections talking up his chances of breaking the O’Brien stranglehold on the race.

Another major challenger from ‘across the water’ is the Godolphin trained, Chabal with Frankie Dettori on board. Great expectations were held for this son of Galileo, until he ‘fluffed his lines’ badly in the Dante Stakes, where he was well beaten by Cape Blanco. At First Sight is an interesting entry even though he is likely to be used as a pacemaker, a task he performed so well in the Epsom Derby that he ended coming second with odds of 100/1. He has of course been beaten since in the King Edward Vll Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he finished fourth in the race won by Monterosso. However at 25/1 for Sunday’s Classic, At First Sight could interest Each Way punters. For us however we will go for the favourite, Cape Blanco to beat stablemate, Jan Vermeer with Monterosso also making the frame.
