The Henry Cecil trained Twice Over will need to overcome a worse draw than last year if he is to land the odds in the world’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Racecourse on Saturday afternoon. The six year old has been drawn out wide in stall 12, one worse than last year from where he could only manage to finish in tenth place. For that reason Paddy Power has eased his odds from 2/1 to 9/4 but Twice Over still remains a warm order favourite to win the race.
Punters should remember that although the dual Champion Stakes winner could only finish tenth in 2010, he was only 3½ lengths behind winner Gloria De Campeao and was nowhere near his best on the day. It should also be noted that he won Round 3 of the Al Maktoum Challenge over course and distance from a wide draw earlier this month in a warm up for this race and is said to have come out of that race in great shape. He has also benefitted from being in Dubai for a sustained period this year and is far more settled which is why confidence remains high with connections.
The race of course will conclude the 11 week long Dubai Carnival and is the most prestigious of four Group One races on the day. It has attracted a truly international field where for once even the Aidan O’Brien Ballydoyle stable is represented. They in fact run the 2010 Irish Derby winner, Cape Blanco, who is drawn far more favourably than Twice Over in stall four but unlike Twice Over he has not had the benefit of a run at Meydan and it will also be his first on the Tapeta surface. Nonetheless, due to his good draw, the Bookmakers generally have trimmed his odds to around 4/1 although 9/2 is still available from PaddyPower. Jamie Spencer gets the ride.
it is not altogether easy to choose the better of the two entries from the Mike De Kock stable, Musir, who is drawn 7 or Golden Sword, a former Ballydoyle inmate, who is drawn on the wide outside in 14. Musir finished over two lengths behind Twice Over in Round Three of the Al Maktoum Challenge a couple of weeks ago and is generally a 14/1 chance to win this, while also with odds of 14/1 Golden Sword has already won twice at this year’s carnival and is definately nearing his best form.
Others being backed include Gio Ponti who was last seen finishing second behind Goldikova in the Breeder’s Cup Mile last November and who finished fourth in this race 12 months ago. He is generally around the 9/1 mark, a point worse off than the Japanese trained filly, Buena Vista, who finished second last year in the Dubai Sheema Classic and who has won twice at Group One level in her native country. She will be ridden by Ryan Moore and has odds of 8/1.
The best of the Godolphin entries would seem to be Poets Voice, the mount of Frankie Dettori. He has odds of around 11/1 and has the benefit of a run at Meydan this year finishing second behind Wigmore Hall in the Group Two Jebel Hatta three weeks ago. He was also the winner of the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last September where he touched off the challenge from Rip Van Winkle; a reproduction of that form could see him go close, although like Twice Over he is drawn towards the outside in ten.
9/4 Twice Over

11/1 Poets Voice
11/1 Victoire Pisa
14/1 Golden Sword
