The David Pipe trained Madison Du Berlais heads the weights as 14 runners look likely to go to post for this prestigious Grade 3, Racing Post Handicap Chase at Kempton Park this weekend. Punters will remember that the last time Madison Du Berlais appeared in a handicap was when he won the Hennessy Gold Cup in 2008 and although he is 12 lb higher for this; he is the sort who is more than capable of shaking them up in this race.
The 9 year old, who was second, when well beaten by Kauto Star in the King George Chase on Boxing Day has had some very notable performances over the last year or two and could be regarded as the best horse in the race. He has been backed in from long odds into a current price of 8/1 with VC Bet

Favourite is the 2009 winner, Nacarat, who will have champion jockey, Tony McCoy on board once again. He was four and a half lengths adrift of Madison Du Berlais in the King George, when they both finished a distance behind Kauto Star, but will enjoy a 4lb pull in the weights for this race which may be just enough to reverse that form. Nacarat is currently being well backed for a repeat Kempton victory, with a best price of 4/1 to win the race.

The Paul Nicholls trained, Fistral Beach, who will be out of the handicap as long as Madison Du Berlais is entered. If that remains the case then intended jockey, Ruby Walsh will have to trim down to 10 stone to ride him. Nicholls knows how to win this race too, having saddled Gungadu to victory in 2008, when carrying top weight. Fistral Beach is of course on the other end of the scale but he has plenty of admirers who have backed him into a current favourite at 7/2, also with VC bet.
Another who has been well backed is Kilcrea Castle, trained by Emma Lavelle who has been very bullish about her horse’s chances all week. Third last time out at the end of January, two lengths behind The Sawyer and a further neck behind Miss Mitch (who is now a non runner) in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot, the 8 year old has come out of that test in great order and was weighted to reverse the form with Miss Mitch in this. To some extent The Sawyer franked the good form when third last week in the Grade 1, Betfair Chase, just about three lengths behind the winner, Monets Grden. Kilcrea Castle is currently a 9/2 shot with Victor Chandler.
