Eighteen runners are set to go to post in the Grade A Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park on Thursday afternoon. It's a really competitive betting heat for this three mile race on soft ground and as is often the case in Ireland and there are joint favourites at the head of the market with Shakervilz and Start Me Up both priced at 8/1 with bookmaker Paddy Power.
Shakervilz is trained by Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh will take to the saddle for Thursday's race. The nine year old has won two of his six starts over the big fences having previously been a seasoned hurdler. It was over hurdles in fact that Shakervilz was last seen on the course, finishing fourteen lengths back in third behind Voler La Vedette in the Grade 2 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown. That was his first effort of the season having finished well beaten on his last chase start in a handicap at the Punchestown Festival. He won the Grade 2 Flying Bolt Novice Chase at Navan two years ago but hasn't won on the racecourse since.
Joint favourite Start Me Up is the entry of Charlie Swan. The eight year old was last seen out over Christmas at Limerick where he was beaten four and a half lengths into third in a Grade B handicap. Winner that day was Seabass who had been the ante-post favourite for Thursday's race before being taken out. This will be only his fifth race over the big fences but has some decent form winning a beginners chase at Navan in December when beating the usefull Berties Dream by a head. He'll need to improve here on official ratings but the bookmakers seem to think he has a good chance.
Jack The Bus is one of four horses priced up at 9/1 with Paddy Power. The Peter Casey trained twelve year old has certainly been around the block but is currently racing off his highest mark yet thanks to two Navan successes this season, most recently ten days ago winning a Grade C handicap. Barry Geraghty takes the ride onboard former point to pointer Adams Island who is also a 9/1 chance. The Paul Nolan trained eight year old ran in a Pertemps Handicap Hurdle qualifier at Christmas and races off a low mark here.
Dessie Hughes trains Rivage D'Or who is another who could be well handicapped. The seven year old won a beginners chase at Thurles earlier in the season before finishing third in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse last month. Meanwhile, Glam Gerry, another 9/1 chance with Paddy Power comes here off the back of a win last time out, scoring by eight lengths in a handicap chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting.
10/1 chance On His Own was previously trained by Howard Johnson in England before his ban. Owner Graham Wylie has moved the horse over to the Mullins year with the Grand National in mind, with this race proving a decent trial in the past. Both Numbersixvalverde and Hedgehunter won this race before going on to score at Aintree and there's sure to be a market move for the winner here in the ante-post betting.
