Just five runners are set to go to post in Thursday's Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park on Thursday afternoon. It's a good card at the Irish track with the afternoon's big race the Thyestes Handicap Chase and organisers will be pleased to see the mare Voler La Vedette running here instead of Leopardstown on Sunday where she holds an entry for the Irish Champion Hurdle. The Colm Murphy trained eight year old prefers a bit of cut in the ground and should prefer this three mile contest over three miles than the shorter trip of the Irish Champion on Sunday. Irish bookmaker Boylesports have installed the eight year old as their 4/7 favourite.
Voler La Vedette will be looking for a fourth consecutive win in Graded company on Thursday and the mare really seems to have trained on this season. She's won races from two miles right through to three miles and currently holds entries in the David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle where she's a 4/1 second favourite, plus the World Hurdle where she's available to back at 14/1.
Her wins this season have come in the Grade 2 Lismullen Hurdle at Navan, the Grade 1 Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse and most recently in the Grade 2 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown. She's officially rated three pounds less than her nearest opponent in the betting on Thursday but will be in receipt of a mares allowance of seven pounds and definitely looks the one to beat.
Willie Mullins trains second favourite Zaidpour at odds of 11/8 withBoyle Sports. The six year old was well fancied going into last season's Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham but he finished a well beaten seventh. He's bounced back this season with two wins albeit in rather modest company and has his work cut out to get the better of the mare Voler La Vedette here. He's unknown over the trip having won over two miles and six furlongs on heavy ground but is 20/1 for the World Hurdle, which could be his desired destination if he wins here on Thursday.
Further down the betting is the Gordon Elliott trained Chicago Grey at odds of 25/1. A winner of the marathon four miler at Cheltenham last March, this race should be a bit too swift for him hence the prices. The same could be said of Whatuthink (33/1) and Benash (50/1) and it would be a big surprise if either made the frame.
4/7 Voler La Vedette
11/8 Zaidpour
25/1 Chicago Grey
33/1 Whatuthink
50/1 Benash
