King George Vl Chase Tips: Long Run Can Bounce Back in Kempton Park Feature

As is usual for the King George Vl Chase at Kempton Park, the tips have been coming in thick and fast, with no real sign of abating until the actual off on Boxing Day. The main focus of those tips has been four time winner, Kauto Star who will be looking to regain this prestigious crown after suffering his only defeat in this race last season by new champion and subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Long Run.

Kauto Star in fact has been backed into 10/3 with Paddy Power who also make Long Run a very short priced 5/4 favourite. The two of course have already met in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park this season, where Kauto Star grabbed some much needed revenge for his defeats in the King George and Gold Cup last term. The Paul Nicholls trained ‘superstar’ strolled up to take the ‘Betfair’ by eight lengths, producing one of his best ever performances but in all probability will need to at least repeat that if he is to get the better of Long Run again, who was clearly in need of the run that day.

Of course jockey bookings are always a very important aspect when trying to pick out the winner of a race of this magnitude. It is significant therefore that the Ditcheat number one Jockey, Ruby Walsh has elected to ride Kauto Star in preference to stablemate Master Minded, clearly believing that the staying ability of Kauto Star tips the scales at least between those two Clive Smith owned chasers.

Master Minded, twice the 2 mile Champion Chaser will be stepping up to three miles for the first time in his career and will have a lot to prove. There is no doubting his class however or his jumping prowess and for many he could be the ‘dark horse’ in the race. In addition to the two major protagonists he will also be taking on old rival, Somersby from the Henrietta Knight stable. Somersby has yet to finish in front of Master Minded in four starts against him but like his rival will be taking on three miles for the first time in this Boxing Day highlight. Currently Master Minded can be backed with odds of 6/1, while Somersby is a 12/1 shot, with the potentially dangerous, Captain Chris at 7/1.

Bookmakers in fact have all reported market support for Captain Chris, winner of the Grade One, Arkle Challenge Trophy over two miles at last season’s Cheltenham Festival. He also won the equivalent race at the Punchestown Festival a few weeks later. Trained by Phillip Hobbs, the seven year old unseated jockey Richard Johnson on his seasonal reappearance when looking certain to win the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter at the beginning of November. He is another entry with a great deal of class about him, but he too will be stepping up to the three mile trip for the first time but he has won at Grade Two level in a 2m5f Novices Chase last season.

One entry certain to get the trip is the 2010 Hennessy Gold Cup winner, Diamond Harry, who will only be having his second run since then. He finished fourth behind Kauto Star and Long Run last time in the Betfair Chase, but will undoubtedly come on for the run and will have the mighty Barry Geraghty in the saddle. His trainer Nick Williams has always been confident about the ability of this eight year old although he knows he has plenty to find with the two leading fancies. However, Diamond Harry will improve for his last run and is capable of taking this opportunity to put himself up there with the really top class chasers around today. It would be no surprise therefore to see him run a big race on Boxing Day and as such he is the best of the each way tips with odds of 16/1 available from paddy power for this race.
