There's a Christmas cracker of a three mile novice chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. It maybe playing second fiddle to the King George VI Chase but it's not beyond the realm of imagination that a couple of the main protagonists in the Feltham Novices' Chase will be back here in twelve months running in the big one. Run over three miles, the WilliamHill.com Feltham Novices' Chase is off at 2pm at the Surrey track, just six horses go to post but two of the main contenders for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham go head to head.
Market leader with the sponsors William Hill is the grey Grands Crus, who is two from two over fences this season. A top staying hurdler last season, he only found the brilliant Big Buck's too good for him which was no disgrace. Barring a slight mistake at the open ditch on his first effort over fences in Cheltenham's November meeting, he followed this up with a good round of jumping to win at Newbury last time out in a Grade 2 contest. This is another step up given the opposition he'll face on Boxing Day but granted a clear round David Pipe's six year old is certainly the one to beat at odds of 11/8.
Second favourite is another talented hurdler Bobs Worth from the Nicky Henderson stable. Unbeaten since his very first race in a bumper at Kempton two years ago, the six year old went unbeaten last season over hurdlers which cilminated in winning the three mile, one furlong Albert Bartlett Novices' Chase at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. He won the Grade 2 Berkshire Novices' Steeple Chase at Newbury on his one and only start this season, touching off the talented Cue Card by a shoulder under a fantastic ride from jockey Barry Geraghty. Hills make Bobs Worth an 11/4 chance at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Next in the betting is the baby of the field, 7/2 chance Silviniaco Conti is five years olds and seems to have taken to jumping after a decent season hurdling last year. The French import won a Grade 2 at Cheptstow over hurdles before winning the Coral Hurdle at Ascot. Third place behind Menorah and Cue Card in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham seemed to dent his confidence and he didn't past the winning post first again until his last start at Wincanton when a good round of jumping saw him beat Mad Moose by twenty-five lengths in a Grade 2. He has a little to find on the two market leaders here and has yest to race over this distance.
All three of the market leaders are prominent in the betting for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham next March. Grands Crus is the 3/1 favourite with William Hill to win the champion three mile novice race at Prestbury Park in the Spring, with Bobs Worth a best price second favourite at 8/1, with Silviniaco Conti 14/1.
Of the remaining three entered in Monday's race, Teaforthree is the shortest price at 12/1. The seven year old trained by Rebecca Curtis has some decent form this season, having been beaten a length and a half by the talented Join Together at Cheltenham, he's since gone on to win at Chepstow earlier this month beating Restless Harry in the process. He should find things a little too hot here however and it would be a surprise should he place.
Mr Moonshine will probably front run here but Sue Smith's seven year old found the Peterborough Chase hot going so could well struggle again here at odds of 16/1, whilst Emmaslegend is the outsider of the field at 33/1.
11/8 Grands Crus
11/4 Bobs Worth
7/2 Silviniaco Conti
12/1 Teaforthree
16/1 Mr Moonshine
33/1 Emmaslegend
