JP McManus tasted success in the Irish Grand National in 2007 with Butler's Cabin and the Irish owner has a quality team heading to post for this year's renewal. Not only does he have the Welsh National winner in Synchronised, he also has the attractively handicapped Quantitiveeasing as well some interesting other runners including Sunnyhillboy and Quiscover Fontaine.
Of the foursome Quantitiveeasing comes first in the market at 9/1 with Victor Chandler. The six-year-old is the choice of champion jockey AP McCoy after being a model of consistency for connections. A short-priced winner at both Fontwell and Market Rasen, he then put up a career best when just getting edged out by Divers in the Centenary Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He has only been risen three pounds for that run and if he can improve on that outing must be a contender in this tricky contest.
Although Synchronised has the burden of top weight he could well be the each way value of the race. Currently 20/1 with Victor Chandler, Synchronised breezed to success in the Welsh National and then ran creditably off a career high mark in the Midlands National. He has since been dropped four pounds and off a mark of 155 could well be over-priced at 20/1.
Prince Erik was a narrow winner of a novice contest at Naas last time out but this a massive step up in grade and at 15/2 is far too short. An unproven stayer the Dermot Weld-trained seven-year-old has also struggled when tackling the quicker ground and there's much better value elsewhere.
Willie Mullins has never bagged this prize and the Co. Carlow handler's best chance of success is with Some Target. A distant fifth in the four-miler at Cheltenham behind Chicago Grey, this seven-year-old will relish the marathon trip and with only a featherweight of 10st 1lb to carry has to be one to watch at 10/1 with Victor Chandler.
Backstage was never in with a shout in the Grand National a fortnight ago but Gordon Elliott's nine-year-old gelding may be more positively ridden in this contest and could be interesting at 16/1 with VCBet.
Sunnyhillboy was a revelation last season and even though he fell in the Spinal Research Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on his only start this year could bounce back with aplomb. Off 10st 9lb the Jonjo O'Neill-trained eight-year-old could enjoy the further distance and is definitely another of McManus' contenders to watch out for at 16/1.
Beautiful Sound has failed to scrape into the contest and has to settle for a reserve berth and would've been an eye-catching contender but with him unlikely to feature it could possibly be a Blue Riband day for JP McManus with a feasible one-two-three.
