The irrepressible Big Buck's is 5/2 to go unbeaten again during the 2011/12 national hunt season, according to Betfred. Paul Nicholls' World Hurdle champion is undefeated in his last twelve outings and went through all of last season without tasting defeat, with his highly anticipated seasonal reappearance set to take place at Newbury on Saturday.
Nicholls has ominously stated that he believes Big Buck's should be at his very best this season and that will be a worrying statement for pretenders to his crown in the staying hurdle division.
The 8-year-old has won twelve consecutive races since unseating Sam Thomas at the last during the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup. Since then he has been an odds on favourite for his last nine starts and he has claimed the Long Distance Hurdle twice in a row.
The Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday is set to be the scene of Big Buck's return to the race track this season and he is the odds on favourite. He has won the last two renewals of the Grade Two race and would match the record of Inglis Drever if he manages to claim the title for a third time in a row.
The odds are certainly backing Big Buck's to make it three as the legend of staying hurdles is a 1/6 odds on favourite with Paddy Power, with a maximum of six rivals set to take him on. Sparky May is the shortest priced of the rest as the smart mare is available at 9/1, while Duc De Regniere is available at 10/1 on his first start for Tom Symonds. The 9-year-old, who moved from the stables of Nicky Henderson, has finished third and second to Big Buck's in the last two years in the race and has it all to do to topple the World Hurdle champion.
Big Buck's is currently Betfred's 4/5 odds on favourite to win the World Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival for a fourth year in succession. He made history last year as he battled to a length and a half victory over Grands Crus to match Inglis Drever's record of three wins in the prestigious race.
The nearest rivals come March are expected to be the recent Morgiana Hurdle winner Thousand Stars, who won the County Handicap Hurdle at the Festival back in 2010. Willie Mullins' 7-year-old is currently available at odds of 6/1 for the World Hurdle with Betfred.com. Meanwhile, Aintree Hurdle winner Oscar Whisky is an 8/1 punt.
The rest of the staying hurdle division has it all to do to unseat Big Buck's from his perch though as the three time World Hurdle champion bids for another unbeaten season for Paul Nicholls.
