Richard Hannon appears to set the standard in Sandown's Bet365 Classic Trial as he saddles both Auld Burns and Measuring Time. The pair met at Newmarket on April 14 in the 250,000 Tattersalls Millons 3-y-o Trophy with the former just coming out on top.
The stables second string that day, Auld Burns was the surprise winner of the ten furlong contest at 25/1 and with Measuring Time only half-a-length behind him it is sure to be another fascinating duel between the pair. Even though Auld Burns came out on top last time Hannon's stable jockey Richard Hughes elects to stay with Measuring Time who is 5/1 with Paddy Power, with Jamie Spencer taking the ride on Auld Burns.
The way Auld Burns picked up in the final furlong to career past Measuring Time shows stamina is his forte and if this Classic trial is run at decent gallop then we could well have Auld Burns just getting the better of his stablemate once more at 6/1 with Paddy Power.
This tricky contest is not just about the Hannon pairing and Mark Johnston's Dordogne looks to be a very lively contender and he is 10/3 favourite with PaddyPower. A winner at the Craven meeting in the Listed Feilden Stakes the three-year-old certainly is one to consider as he steps up to ten furlongs for the first time. Dordogne showed his resilience when finding more under pressure for Frankie Dettori and the extra furlong shouldn't be a worry. He beat another of today's contenders in Specific Gravity who is 5/1 comfortably and even though Henry Cecil's runner is bound to come on for that reappearance is hard to see him altering the placings with Dordogne.
Whenever Ryan Moore is booked for a Ballydoyle runner you have to make note and the former champion jockey will sit aboard Jackaroo for Aidan O'Brien who is available at 10/1. The Irish raider was an impressive winner of a maiden as a two-year-old but failed to get his head in front in three further races. The son of Galileo is bound to come on from another winter on his back but looks to have his work cut out here with several showing full fitness.
A more interesting outsider is Mark Johnston's other runner Hurricane Higgins who is 9/1 with the Irish firm. A maiden winner on the Polytrack at Lingfield in January where he breezed to victory by four lengths, he then travelled over to France and finished 2nd in a mile contest at Deauville. On the bare form he has a lot to do but he could be worth a speculative each way punt if he improves on his first start on the grass on these shores.
Barbican is unbeaten in his two races but this a monster step up in class and he will have had to improve immensely if he is to be at the standard of the front three in the betting and at 16/1 may struggle. The market will be fascinating to watch in this renewal but Dordogne may just have the class to outdo some exciting types.
