Somersby heads Ryanair Betting following Victor Chandler win

There was a busy weekend of horse racing with the 2012 Cheltenham Festival in mind with both Ascot and Haydock providing some clues on Saturday. The big race of the day was at Ascot with the Grade 1 Victor Chandler Chase. Former Queen Mother winner Master Minded had won the last two renewals of this race before Saturday where Somersby went one better than when he pushed Master Minded all the way twelve months ago.

The Henrietta Knight trained eight year old enjoyed his first win in four runnings and only his second win in eleven, where he'd endured some bad luck in Graded company, finishing placed in eight races. He stayed on gamely up the straight at Ascot to head Finian's Rainbow on the line in a good race. It had looked as though the Nicky Henderson trained Finian's Rainbow had things sowed up turning for home, with an ultra confident jockey Barry Geraghty having a good look around. However, despite trading at long odds on the exchanges, last year's Arkle runner up was pipped by Somersby on the rail.

Somersby was nibbled at for both the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Ryanair Chase following this victory although it's likely that he'll compete in the latter where he is now the 5/1 joint favourite with bookmaker Stan James. Knight herself intimated that the two and a half mile contest at the Festival would be his likely destination and he shares favourtism with Irish fancy Rubi Light.

Also in the Ryanair betting is last year's Jewson Novices' Chase winner Noble Prince, who had been an early ante-post favourite for the Grade 2 event on Cheltenham's Thursday. The Paul Nolan trained eight year old won on his seasonal debut in a Grade 3 at Naas but has since finished runner-up on each of his last three starts. His latest defeat came on Sunday where he was beaten three quarters of a length by Blazing Tempo in the Grade 2 Normans Grove Chase at Fairyhouse. A beaten odds on favourite, he's now been pushed out to 15/2 for the Ryanair by Stan James, with Blazing Tempo getting a quote of 14/1 with the firm.

Elsewhere at Ascot on Saturday there was a win for the Nicky Henderson trained Triolo D'Alene in the 2m3f Novices' Handicap Chase and has been clipped into 12/1 favourite for the Centenary Chase at Cheltenham as a result. Alan King trained yet another juvenile to success in the Triumph Hurdle trial at Ascot, Balder Success getting quotes of 20/1 for Triumph and 16/1 for the Fred Winter. There was also a win for Violin Davis in the Grade 2 Warfield Mares' Hurdle at Ascot, with the Paul Nicholls trained 6yo a 20/1 chance in the David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle at Cheltenham, a market headed by the 11/10 chance Quevega.

Up at Haydock Cinders And Ashes recorded a hat-trick of wins by landing the Supreme Novices' Hurdle trial on bottomless ground. StanJames.com were impressed enough to put the Donald McCain trained 5yo up as 12/1 joint second favourite behind Stes To Freedom. Celestial Halo won what looks like a very weak renewal of the Stanjames.com Champion Hurdle Trial and the Paul Nicholls trained eight year old can be backed at 80/1 for Grade 1 at Cheltenham. He's 50/1 for the World Hurdle with Stan James which suggests his chances of a Grade 1 win at Cheltenham looks beyond him.
