Barney Roy to bound to Juddmonte International glory at York
Wednesday 23rd August, 2017 - 3:35pm York - Juddmonte International Stakes
One of the highlights of the entire Flat season takes place on the opening day of York's Ebor Festival, where the Classic generation take on their older adversaries in the valuable Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes, and the 2017 renewal, with a select field of seven runners heading to the 1m 2f start on the Knavesmire, will be a tremendous showpiece event.
- Churchill won 2000 Guineas earlier in the season
- Barney Roy beat Churchill in St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot
- Ulysses beat Barney Roy in Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park

Barney Roy vs Ulysses vs Churchill
A top class triumvirate head the betting for this year's contest, and it's the Richard Hannon-trained Barney Roy that has been installed as the 11/4 favourite with bet365 bookmakers, but the impressive St James's Palace Stakes winner was beaten by 100/30 chance Ulysses in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park earlier in the season, so will be aiming to turn that narrow nose defeat around here.
Barney Roy beat Churchill (3/1 with Sky Bet) in that aforementioned St James's Palace Stakes, but it was the latter that strode to victory in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at the start of the campaign, so this Juddmonte will be a fascinating affair with the top three in the betting all having met this season, so it's an intriguing contest to see who will come out on top.
Ulysses failed to deal with top-class filly Enable in the King George at Ascot on his last start, so Sir Michael Stoute's raider will be hoping he can return to winning ways, but James Doyle may try and get Barney Roy a little more prominent in the early stages of this race, having been held up to get the trip in the Eclipse, and with a blistering turn of foot he could be the one to be with here.
Churchill didn't take his chance in the Sussex Stakes, when pulled out late on, but he has to show he still oozes the same quality as he did earlier in the season when winning the Guineas, and it's hard to see him getting the better of Barney Roy in this hotly-anticipated renewal.
Cliffs Of Moher And Shutter Speed Add Three-Year-Old Depth
Aidan O'Brien last won this race in 2014 with Australia, and the master of Ballydoyle will not only run Churchill, but he will unleash Investec Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher, who could only finish four-and-a-half lengths behind Ulysses in the Eclipse, but he showed when finishing second in the Epsom Classic earlier in the season that he does have some top notch form, so could be an intriguing runner at 7/1 with William Hill.
John Gosden's Shutter Speed impressed when winning the Musidora Stakes at York a few months ago, but the sole filly in this race will want to bounce back from a fourth placed finish in the Prix de Diane, but in receipt of weight from all her rivals the 10/1 chance with Betfred could be the potential surprise package, if she can emulate her fine win on the track earlier in the season.
Decorated Knight & My Dream Boat Complete Field
Roger Charlton's Decorated Knight kicked off the season with a fine win in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but has failed to get his head in front since, and was well beaten by Ulysses and Barney Roy in the Eclipse, so it's hard to fancy the 16/1 chance with bet365, while My Dream Boat will complete the line-up, and was way down the field in the King George, and at 40/1 with Paddy Power is the outsider in a race that can go the way of the Hannon team.
