Trainer, Willie Mullins is taking nothing for granted when his exciting Champion Hurdle candidate, Hurricane Fly attempts to make it a three timer this season with victory in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday. Despite Paddy Power the Irish Bookmakers making the seven year old a huge odds on 1/2 favourite, Mullins is acutely aware of the threat posed by the Charles Byrne trained Solwhit even though Hurricane fly has beaten him in their last three meetings including the Festival Hurdle over this course and distance just three weeks ago.
Mullins confirmed that he thought that there is very little between the two and that Hurricane Fly got the run of the race three weeks ago, with Solwhit being unable to find a clear passage until it was too late; he still ran on well and only went down by 2 lengths.
Nonetheless, Mullins reports that his charge is in fine health at home and well prepared for a big run and to win this prestigious race for the first time. He hopes to win here and then will concentrate his efforts towards winning the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March for which he is the second favourite behind Binocular with odds of 5/1 also from PaddyPower
Byrnes also reports that Solwhit is in great form at home and came out of the Festival Hurdle in great shape. Like Mullins he agreed that there is little to choose between the two believing that a bad jump from either could decide the race. This is why he believes that his horse represents fantastic value to win this race for a second successive year with odds of 11/4 and also believes that the 33/1 about him for the Champion Hurdle is a Bookmakers gift.
Unfortunately only five will go to post with the mare Voler La Vedette, third best in the betting at 12/1. She was third behind Hurricane Fly and Solwhit in the Grade One, Hatton Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse in mid December and should be good enough to finish in the same position in this. Sublimity, the 2007 Champion Hurdle winner will also be in the field, but he is well past his sell by date and should not trouble the market leaders, nor will the fifth runner, Thousand Stars also from the Mullins yard who is the rank outsider at 25/1.
1/2 Hurricane Fly
11/4 Solwhit
12/1 Voler La Vedette
20/1 Sublimity
25/1 Thousand Stars
