Whether it is down to a poor crop of two year olds this season is not certain but only a disappointing six juveniles will line up for Saturday’s Group One Racing Post Trophy over a mile at Doncaster, with the vast majority of tips and money aimed in the direction of the Aidan O’Brien trained, Camelot.
He is certain to go off as the favourite even though he has only been seen out once and that was 3 months ago in July when he made a winning debut in a competitive maiden over a mile at Leopardstown. That said he s very highly regarded at the Ballydoyle stables and being the son of Montjeu there is no doubting his pedigree or potential, nonetheless concerns remain that his lack of experience could well be his undoing in this.
Also in receipt of plenty of tips is John Gosden’s Fencing, who has been backed into 3/1 with Ladbrokes following several excellent gallop reports. Winner of the Listed Denford Stud Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newbury last time out in August, this son of Street Cry has been very impressive at home; hence the spate of Newmarket tips, and will be suited by the extra furlong that this race offers. He was due to run in the Group One Dewhurst Stakes last week, but Gosden believed that the ground was a little too quick for him at Ascot, which could be the situation again this week, punters are therefore advised to confirm his entry before making any bet.
Godolphin’s Encke, trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, is another being backed and could easily be one coming in ‘off the radar’. He was a very impressive winner of his maiden last time out over eight furlongs at Newmarket, where he coasted up in the final furlong and showed an excellent turn of foot to win by over 4 lengths. He will be running on similar ground to Newmarket on Saturday which has to put him with a big chance. He can be backed currently with odds of 6/1, also available from ladbrokes.
Of the rest only Jim Bolger’s Zip Top looks to carry any sort of threat to the market principles but even he has not ‘set the world on fire’ on his previous three outings. He did win on his debut where he beat the useful Ballydoyle runner, Tenth Star, a winner since, but his last run when third behind the Richard Hannon trained, Crius in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket last month left a lot to be desired. It cannot be said that he has been the subject of many tips to win this important Group One, but the Bolger stable should always be respected and it is one which is in very good form.
Winner: Encke @ 6/1 with Ladbrokes.com
