Despite two of National Hunt’s biggest names being declared it is a hugely disappointing three runner field that will go to post on Saturday to contest the Grade Two Old Roan Chase over 2½ miles at Aintree. The Paul Nicholls trained former dual champion chaser Master Minded will undoubtedly go off as the a big odds on favourite to win, while support for Alberta’s Run has been described as existent but scant by Bookmakers. Currently Master Minded is around the 4/9 odds on mark with Ladbrokes, who quote Albertas Run at around 2/1 against.
The two principles were last seen over this course and distance in April in the Grade One Melling Chase, which Master Minded won by a convincing 9 lengths which is perhaps why the 2/1 against Albertas Run to reverse the form in this race is not being regarded as a fair price.
The Jonjo O’Neill trained Albertas Run, as most know, is a back to back winner of the Grade One, Ryanair Chase, honours he took at the Cheltenham Festival in 2010 and 2011, but he has yet to finish in front of Master Minded in any race to date.
He was also beaten by Nicholls’s charge last November in the Grade Two Amlin Chase at Ascot, a race in which he fell at the third last, when challenging Master Minded for the lead. Therefore on all known form between the two there looks to be only one winner, with the best that Albertas Run can expect being a clear round and getting as close to Master Minded as possible at the finish. Of course Master Minded could fall, but that is something he has never done when racing for Nicholls in the UK and it is certainly not an outcome that punters should fear.
That said there is no doubting the class of Albertas Run, in addition to his success’s in the ‘Ryanair’ he has also won two further Grade One races, including the 2010 Melling Chase as well as the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2008. He has also put in several excellent performances elsewhere, including finishing in second place behind Kauto Star in the 2008 King George Vl Chase at Kempton Park. His trainer, is always keen to get an early season run into him, although his performance in this race 12 months ago was most disappointing, finishing in fourth place, 45 lengths behind winner, Monet’s Garden, a performance which quite simply in light of what he achieved subsequently, should be ignored
The third runner in tomorrow’s race is the Peter Bowen trained seven year old Pure Faith, who won a novice chase over two miles on this course in May. However he showed no evidence of being a horse that could remotely damage the reputations of the ‘big two’ when running fourth of six in a two mile chase at Cheltenham last week where he finished over 14 lengths behind the winner. Pure Faith is his name but little faith should be shown in him winning this, which is why ladbrokes are offering him as a 40/1 shot.
This race is clearly all about the big two both in terms of horse and jockey, it will be a great spectacle to see Ruby Walsh and Tony McCoy go head to head in a Grade Two chase so early in the season, but punters should not expect any one else but Ruby to be heading for the winners enclosure at the end!
4/9 Master Minded
2/1 Albertas Run
40/1 Pure Faith
