The beautiful Goodwood racecourse on the Sussex Downs takes centre stage of the horse racing world next week when the annual Glorious Goodwood racing festival takes place over five days. The Festival which is one of the high points of the flat racing season will host 35 races, which include two major Group One races, the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes, plus two of the year’s biggest betting races, the Stewards Cup and the Totesport Mile.

There are of course a number of other Group Two and Group Three races, plus several top quality handicaps, however we preview the four major races below.
This group One is raced over 1 mile on the second day of the festival and was won last year by the Aidan O’Brien trained, Rip Van Winkle, who is a likely runner again this time around. Favourite however, is the highly impressive, Richard Hannon trained, Canford Cliffs, winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Bookmakers have reported heavy betting on the three year old which means punters are best to get on him sooner rather than later. He is certainly our tip to win the race and can be backed at around the even money mark
See Sussex Stakes Odds Comparison.
This race is one of the richest of its kind in the UK and as always has attracted a highly competitive field of runners. Favourite ahead of the race is the Mark Johnston trained, Bunbury Cup winner, St Moritz who is around the 8/1 mark currently. Johnston in fact trained the winner of this last year and could have as many as six in the race this time around. Our fancy for the race however is the Barry Hills trained Critical Moment, who has raced at group level and certainly has some class about him. Provided the draw suits, then at 12/1 with Ladbrokes he will be the one we will be backing.

This Group One race for fillies takes place on Saturday 31st July and should be one of the best races of the year. Favourite is last year’s winner, Midday, trained by Henry Cecil, but she will need to put her best foot forward if she is to hold off the French challenge of Stacelita, a winner of 7 of her 9 starts, including three at Group One level. The filly we like the most however, is the rapidly improving, Mick Channon trained, Music Show, winner of the recent Falmouth Stakes. She can be backed at around 7/1.

Also raced on the final day of the Festival, this race over six furlongs is likened to a cavalry charge and provides spectacular viewing. Not always a good race for punters as both the handicapper and the draw can defy the obvious choices, our advice therefore is to check out the draw and the latest betting before making any commitment. Favourite currently is the Roger Charlton trained, Genki, winner of the Bet365 Conditions Stakes at Haydock at the beginning of the month. He is around the 8/1 mark, but there are several others close up in the betting, including the one we like, Enact, trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Currently at around the 12/1 mark with Ladbrokes.com. This 4 year old has been working extremely well at home and will come into the race very fresh after last being seen when second behind, Hawkeyethenoo, at Newmarket on 2nd May.
